Chapter 6 - A Home Without Shadows

Six months later, the peeling blue house on Elm Street was sold.

In its place stood a sprawling, sunlit estate in upstate New York, surrounded by rolling green hills, high stone walls, and private woodlands where the air smelled of pine and fresh soil instead of car exhaust.

There were no dark sedans idling secretly on the street corners. The Camorra syndicate had been completely dismantled, its leaders imprisoned or scattered, leaving Aleandro’s empire unshakeable and secure.

On a warm afternoon in May, the backyard was filled with the sound of laughter.

Seven-year-old Emma and five-year-old Oliver were running through the tall grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy. Emma was holding a pad of drawing paper, showing Oliver how to draw a big house with a red roof under a bright yellow sun.

I sat on the wooden patio bench, wearing a comfortable white summer dress, holding a cool glass of lemonade.

Aleandro walked out from the house, wearing a simple navy linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The ruthless Don of New York looked completely relaxed, the dark circles under his eyes replaced by a quiet, radiant peace.

He walked over, sat down beside me, and wrapped his broad arm around my shoulders, pulling me close to his chest.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently, resting his chin on my hair.

"I was thinking about six years ago," I admitted softly, looking out at our children playing in the garden. "About how terrified I was. About how I thought running away was the only way to keep her safe."

Aleandro squeezed my shoulder, his voice filled with deep, unwavering sincerity. "You did what a mother had to do, Sophia. You protected her. But you don't have to carry that weight alone anymore."

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a delicate gold ring set with a clear, brilliant diamond.

"No more hidden names," Aleandro whispered, sliding the ring onto my finger. "No more running. No more cold nights in Queens. Stay with me, Sophia. Let me be the father they deserve, and the husband I should have been six years ago."

I looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had faced a hundred guns just to stand in my hallway.

I smiled—a real, unburdened smile—and leaned up to kiss his cheek.

"I'm not going anywhere, Aleandro," I whispered against his skin. "We're home."

From across the lawn, Emma and Oliver saw us holding hands. They dropped their crayons and came running across the green grass, their bright laughter filling the afternoon air as they threw themselves into their father's waiting arms.
