Chapter 5 - The Battle on Elm Street

I locked the heavy wooden kitchen door and pulled both children under the sturdy oak table. I wrapped my arms around Emma and Oliver, pressing their heads against my chest so they couldn't see the windows.

Outside, the quiet rain was shattered by the deafening roar of automatic gunfire.

TRRRRRR-RAT-TAT-TAT!

Glass shattered in the front living room as stray bullets tore through the front porch. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding the children tightly as Oliver buried his face in my navy scrubs and Emma clutched my waist.

"Is it thunder, Mommy?" Emma whispered, her small body shaking violently.

"Yes, baby," I lied, tears streaming down my face. "It's just a big storm. It will pass soon."

Shouts echoed from the street—harsh Italian curses followed by the heavy, rhythmic crack of suppressed handguns.

Aleandro’s men were not street thugs; they were a trained, disciplined military force. Within four minutes, the heavy gunfire gave way to single, deliberate shots, and then... absolute, heavy silence.

The rain returned, tapping softly against the kitchen window.

Five agonizing minutes passed. My heart hammered against my ribs as I waited for the door to be kicked open—terrified of whether it would be Vicari’s assassins or the father of my children.

Then, a soft, familiar knock came from the kitchen door.

Three taps.

"Sophia," Aleandro’s voice came through the wood, clear and calm. "It's over. You can open the door."

I scrambled out from under the table, my legs trembling so hard I could barely stand. I unlocked the door and threw it open.

Aleandro stood in the doorway. His black wool coat was torn at the shoulder, stained with rain and soot, but he was standing tall. Behind him, Matteo and three bodyguards were already clearing the street, pulling dark vehicles away before the distant wail of police sirens could reach the block.

Aleandro looked down at his hands, making sure there was no blood on them, before stepping into the kitchen and kneeling down in front of us.

"They're gone," Aleandro said softly, looking at Emma and Oliver. "The storm is over."
