Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

Late that night, after the celebrations had ended, the fireworks had faded into the night sky, and the park had grown quiet under the pale glow of the moon, I sat alone in my private study.

The mahogany desk was clear of weapons, encrypted communicators, and dangerous reports.

In the center of the polished wood rested a single framed picture: Sophia’s crayon drawing of the river, the steamboat, and the two stick figures holding hands beneath the words Safe now.

I opened the top drawer of the desk and pulled out an old, leather-bound accounting ledger—the physical record of every deal, every alliance, and every debt accrued over forty years in the underworld.

For a long time, I stared at the yellowed pages filled with ink and numbers.

Then, I picked up a fountain pen, turned to the very final page of the book, and wrote a single sentence across the bottom line:

The ledger is closed. The river belongs to the children.

I closed the heavy leather cover with a soft, satisfying thud, leaned back in my leather chair, and listened to the gentle, eternal rhythm of the water flowing past my windows.

The storm had passed. The night was quiet. And for the first time in my life, I was completely at peace.
