Chapter 5 - The Morning After

A few minutes later, the heavy oak doors of my study creaked open.

Sophia walked in slowly, clutching her teddy bear in one hand and a fresh piece of construction paper in the other. Elena followed closely behind, her hands clasped nervously in front of her apron, her eyes downcast as if she were still afraid she might have done something wrong.

“Come in, Elena. Come in, sweetheart,” I said, walking over from the balcony and kneeling down to their eye level.

Sophia stopped a few feet away, looking up at me with her big, solemn eyes. She slowly extended her hand, offering the new drawing.

I took it gently.

It wasn't a prescription bottle this time.

It was a picture of the river, drawn in bright blue and yellow crayons. A large steamboat cruised down the center of the water, and standing on the deck were two stick figures—one tall, wearing a black coat, and one small, wearing a yellow sweater, holding hands.

In the corner, written in clumsy, childish handwriting, were the words: Safe now.

My throat tightened, and for a brief, unexpected moment, I felt a hot sting behind my eyes. I had spent decades surrounded by killers, politicians, and thieves, believing that power was measured in territory, guns, and leverage. Yet the most powerful weapon in my entire empire had turned out to be a five-year-old girl’s observant eyes and a box of Crayola crayons.

“Thank you, Sophia,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “This is the finest piece of art I’ve ever received.”

Elena finally looked up, tears welling in her eyes. “Mr. Moretti... I don't know how to thank you. After everything that’s happened with Victor... we understand if you want us to leave. We know we’re just—”

“Elena,” I interrupted gently, standing up and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “You are not going anywhere. From this day forward, you and Sophia have a permanent home in this house. Your safety, your education, and your future are under the direct protection of the Moretti name. That is not a request; it is a vow.”

May you like

Elena pressed her hands to her mouth, letting out a sob of pure relief, and pulled Sophia into a tight embrace.

For the first time in twenty-five years, the grand estate didn't feel like a fortress guarded by paranoia and fear. It felt, miraculously, like a home.
