Chapter 6 - The Kingdom We Built

Six months later.

The estate had changed.

The cold, imposing iron gates had been replaced by sprawling wrought-iron ivy fences. The cavernous, intimidating rooms had been repainted in warm, earthy tones of cream and sage green. The staff—vetted, loyal, and treated with absolute respect—moved through the halls with quiet efficiency.

Outside, in the sprawling gardens overlooking the Texas hills, the spring sun was warm and golden.

I sat on a wooden bench beneath the shade of an old oak tree, watching Emma. She was kneeling by a flower bed, planting rows of white hydrangeas with soil-stained hands that were completely healed, smooth, and unblemished.

The scars were gone. The terror was gone.

As if she felt my gaze, she looked up, wiping a stray strand of hair from her forehead with the back of her wrist, and broke into a smile—the bright, untoubled smile I had fallen in love with a decade ago when we were nothing more than two kids sharing a greasy slice of pizza in a rundown diner downtown.

I stood up, walking across the grass toward her, pulling a small velvet box from my pocket.

She sat back on her heels, watching me approach with a curious tilt of her head.

"What's this?" she asked as I stopped in front of her and dropped down onto one knee in the dirt, not caring that my tailored trousers were getting stained with grass and soil.

"Open it," I said softly.

Emma flipped open the velvet lid. Inside rested a simple, elegant platinum band inlaid with a single, flawless diamond—not the ostentatious, heavy stones my mother used to flash like weapons at society galas, but something pure, delicate, and entirely ours.

"We built an empire on blood and fear, Emma," I said, taking her hand and sliding the ring onto her finger, watching it catch the bright spring sunlight. "We survived the wolves, the traitors, and the darkness. But this... this is the only kingdom that ever truly mattered."

Emma smiled, tears of pure joy shining in her eyes as she leaned forward, wrapping her arms around my neck and pressing her lips to mine.

"It's a beautiful kingdom, Julian," she whispered against my mouth. "And I'm never leaving."

Down the long driveway, the gates stood open—not because we were expecting enemies, but because we no longer had anything to fear. The past was buried in the dust, the debts were paid in full, and for the first time in our lives, the future was entirely ours.
