Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Past

By 3:00 AM, the estate was sanitized.

My private cleanup crew—men whose names didn't exist in any governmental database—had removed the broken glass, patched the front doors with temporary reinforcement panels, and hauled Rostov and his surviving mercenary out to a private airstrip bound for an unmarked cargo flight back to Eastern Europe.

I stood in the kitchen, pouring a cup of black coffee, when I heard soft footsteps behind me.

Emma walked into the kitchen. She was wearing a simple silk robe, her bandaged hands resting gently against her sides. She looked around the spotless room, her eyes lingering on the faint smell of ozone and burnt powder that still lingered in the air from the foyer.

"I heard shouting," she said quietly. "And a sound like thunder."

"Just a thunderstorm, amore," I lied smoothly, turning around and leaning against the counter. "A few branches fell near the western gate. My security team cleared them out."

Emma walked closer, stopping right in front of me. She reached out, her bandaged fingers lightly touching the edge of the tactical vest I hadn't yet unstrapped.

"You're lying," she said, her voice devoid of fear, filled only with a deep, sorrowful wisdom. "I know what thunder sounds like, Julian. And I know what war sounds like."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the artificial armor of my life cracking under the weight of her gaze. I unbuckled the vest, letting it drop to the kitchen floor with a heavy thud, and pulled her into my arms, burying my face in her hair.

"My family sold us out to the Bratva," I murmured against her neck, the confession tasting like ash in my mouth. "They wanted to ruin me because I took away their stolen wealth. They nearly got you killed."

Emma didn't pull away. She wrapped her arms around my waist, pressing her face against my chest, her heartbeat syncing with mine in the quiet dark of the kitchen.

"Let them go, Julian," she whispered. "Not forgive them... but release them. If you keep fighting ghosts and traitors who share your blood, you'll become just like them. I don't want an empire built on vengeance. I just want you."

May you like

I closed my eyes, the last remaining ice around my heart finally melting away into the warmth of her embrace.

"It's over," I promised her. "The wars are finished. From now on, there is only us."
