Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

Within twenty minutes, the peaceful street outside Derek’s house was transformed into a crime scene.

Red and blue strobe lights flashed against the white siding of the two-story home. Two marked patrol cars and an emergency medical vehicle were parked in the driveway.

Inside the living room, a female paramedic was sitting on the couch beside Derek, gently examining Maisie. The little girl was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sipping warm water with electrolytes from a small cup held by her father.

A tall, dark-suited detective named Marcus Vance stood near the fireplace, holding the leather-bound notebook and the fragments of the glass bottle that forensic technicians had bagged from the study floor.

"Mr. Caldwell," Detective Vance said, his voice grim as he reviewed the diary pages. "This notebook alone constitutes premeditated child endangerment, severe physical abuse, and chemical poisoning. Combined with the toxicological residue on the carpet, we have more than enough for a statewide felony warrant."

"Where is she?" Derek asked, his hand resting on Maisie’s back, feeling her steady, shallow breathing as she leaned against him.

"She didn't get far," Vance replied. "Deputies intercepted her vehicle on Interstate 95 heading south toward Florida. She’s currently in custody at the Chatham County Detention Center. Bail will be opposed."

Derek closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The relief didn't feel light or joyful; it felt heavy, like a iron wall settling into place around his heart.

The paramedic looked up at Derek with a warm, reassuring smile. "Her vital signs are stabilizing, Mr. Caldwell. The dehydration is mild to moderate, but because you caught this today, there shouldn't be any long-term organ damage. She needs rest, proper nutrition, and a lot of love."

"She’ll have all of it," Derek said, pressing his lips against the top of Maisie's head. "Everything she ever needs."

Two hours later, after the officers and paramedics had cleared out, the house returned to absolute silence.

Derek took Maisie upstairs to his master bedroom, laying her down on the king-sized bed beneath the heavy velvet quilt. He sat on the edge of the mattress, holding her hand, watching her eyelids grow heavy as the exhaustion of the past six months finally caught up with her body.

"Daddy?" Maisie whispered, her brown eyes fluttering open slightly.

"I'm right here, sweetie," Derek said gently, squeezing her small fingers.

"Are you going to Atlanta now?" she asked, her voice fragile, carrying a lingering trace of the fear that had ruled her life.

Derek reached out, pulling her small body close against his side, wrapping his arms around her so tightly that not even a shadow could come between them.

"I'm never going away again, Maisie," Derek promised, his voice crackling with emotion. "I canceled the meetings. I canceled the trips. It’s just you and me now. Forever."

Maisie didn't ask about Claire. She didn't ask about the green drink or the dark study. She simply closed her eyes, let out a deep, soft sigh, and fell into a calm, dreamless sleep.
