Chapter 2 - The Silent House

Derek parked his car three doors down from his home, pulling up against the curb beneath the shadow of a sprawling magnolia tree. He didn't want the sound of his engine echoing up the long gravel driveway.

He stepped out into the humid Georgia heat, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The quiet neighborhood was still. A lawnmower hummed in the distance, but around his two-story white house, the silence was absolute.

He walked up the side lawn, avoiding the creaky wooden steps of the front porch. He kept to the soft pine straw along the perimeter, moving toward the rear of the house where the kitchen and the sunroom overlooked the backyard.

The back door was unlocked.

Derek pressed his thumb against the brass handle, depressing it slowly, millimetre by millimetre, until the latch slipped free without a click. He slipped inside, stepping into the mudroom.

The house smelled faintly of bleach and lavender.

He took off his leather dress shoes, leaving them by the bench, and moved down the tiled hallway in his socks. Every muscle in his body was coiled tight.

As he approached the kitchen, he heard Claire’s voice coming from the adjacent study. Her tone was sharp, devoid of the gentle, soothing cadence she always used when Derek was in the room.

"You're not sitting down until the baseline is reached, Maisie," Claire said, her voice striking the quiet air like a leather strap. "If you throw it up again, we start the timer over. Stand up straight. Shoulders back."

Derek stopped dead near the doorframe, his vision blurring with a wave of ice-cold shock.

He leaned forward, looking through the slight gap between the door hinge and the frame.

Maisie was standing in the center of the hardwood floor. She was wearing only her thin nightgown. Her small legs were trembling violently as she tried to maintain a rigid, military stance. On the desk behind Claire sat a large glass measuring jug filled with the same thick, pale-green mixture, along with a stopwatch running on an iPad.

Next to Maisie stood a heavy wooden chair, its back turned toward her. On the floor in front of her was a small white plastic bucket.

"Claire..." Maisie gasped out, tears running silently down her reddened cheeks. "My tummy hurts real bad... please... I want my bed..."

"Your body is full of toxins, Maisie," Claire said calmly, standing over the little girl with her arms crossed over her chest. She held a small silver spoon in one hand and a bottle of clear liquid in the other. "Your mother fed you garbage, and your father enables you because he’s weak. The syrup purges the digestive tract. You will take three spoons, you will wait twenty minutes, and then you will drink the alkaline rinse. If you cry, I add five minutes to the bucket routine."

Derek felt the world tilt on its axis.

The syrup.

It wasn't an herbal supplement. It was an emetic—a chemical designed to induce violent vomiting and stomach spasms. She was poisoning his daughter under the guise of "detoxification," systematically breaking the child's body and spirit while keeping her so weak she couldn't complain or resist.

"I want Daddy..." Maisie sobbed, her knees buckling slightly. She didn't drop to the floor; she caught herself, terrified of the timer. "Please... I want Daddy..."

"Your daddy is three hours away, sweetie," Claire sneered softly, stepping closer and grabbing Maisie’s small chin in a tight, merciless grip, forcing the child's head up. "He doesn't want a sick, broken little girl. He gave you to me to fix. Now open your mouth."

Derek didn't just open the door. He exploded through it.
