Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at 5th Street

The night exploded into an inferno of fire, metal, and shattered glass.

The northern syndicate men surrounding the warehouse were caught entirely unprepared for the violent fury that descended upon them. They had assumed Marco Salerno would act like a politician—that he would calculate the economic cost of challenging Milan and compromise.

They did not understand that Marco Salerno had ceased being a businessman the moment Sofia Marchetti had knocked on his study door with mud on her feet.

Mortar rounds launched from Marco’s secondary perimeter teams struck the armored sedans blocking the main intersection, sending towering geysers of flame into the night sky. The concussive blasts shattered the windows of every industrial building for three blocks, showering the street with a glittering rain of glass.

Through the black smoke, Marco moved like a force of nature.

Armed with a heavy tactical shotgun, he walked down the middle of the street, completely unsheltered, firing with deadly, rhythmic precision. Every shot found its target. Behind him, Salvatore and twenty fully armored Salerno soldiers advanced in a tight, disciplined wall of fire, clearing the alleys and rooftops with light machine guns.

"Fallback! Fallback to the main gate!" a northern captain screamed into his radio, before Marco’s lead round took him off his feet, driving him back into the burning wreckage of a overturned Mercedes.

Inside the warehouse, Vincent Rossi sat tied to a heavy steel chair, trembling in terror as the walls shook violently from the explosions outside. Dust and insulation rained down from the ceiling rafters.

The heavy front doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges by a directional breaching charge, crashing inward with a deafening boom.

Marco stepped through the dust and flames, his shotgun hanging at his side, his face covered in faint traces of soot.

Vincent looked up, his eyes bulging with hysteria. "Marco! Please! They were going to kill me if I didn't give them the routes! Corvis forced me!"

Marco walked up to the chair, unbothered by the screams and gunfire fading away in the streets outside. He set the shotgun down against a wooden crate and pulled his Kimber .45 pistol from his holster.

"You told Elena that her husband's work belonged to you," Marco said quietly, pulling the slide back to chamber a hollow-point round.

"I was lying! I'll give it all back! I'll sign whatever you want!" Vincent wept, his pants wet with fear.

"You told a six-year-old girl that no one could save her mother," Marco continued, raising the barrel of the pistol until it rested directly between Vincent’s eyes.

"Marco, please... for God's sake, mercy!"

"Mercy is for men who make mistakes," Marco whispered. "You made a choice."

A single, crisp gunshot echoed through the cavernous warehouse.

The wailing stopped instantly.

Marco lowered the weapon, not bothering to look at the lifeless form slumping forward against the restraints. He turned to Salvatore, who walked through the shattered entrance holding a secure satellite tablet.

"The street is clear, Don Marco," Salvatore reported, his breath coming in heavy white clouds. "Corvis’s surviving men have fled toward the highway. We captured their field commander's communications rig."

"Good," Marco said, racking the slide of his pistol to clear the spent casing. "Send a message to Matteo Corvis in Milan. Send him the video feed from this room."

"And what message do we attach to it?"

Marco paused under the single flickering lightbulb hanging from the rafters.

"Tell him," Marco said softly, "that if a single one of his men ever crosses the river south again... I won't stop at his lieutenants. I will walk into his mansion in Milan and execute him at his own dinner table."

Salvatore nodded firmly. "Understood, Boss. What about the estate?"

Marco took a deep, clean breath of the damp morning air that was beginning to blow through the shattered doors, replacing the smell of cordite and blood.

"Clean this place up," Marco ordered. "I'm going back to the hospital. I have a promise to keep."
