Chapter 3 - The Hospital and the Viper’s Nest

Saint Jude’s Private Hospital was a sprawling modern complex on the west side of the city, illuminated by tall floodlights that cut through the foggy night. The entire eighth floor—the VIP surgical recovery wing—had been completely cleared of outside visitors.

At the end of the long, sterile corridor, four of Marco's guards stood like statues beside the heavy double doors of Room 804.

Marco walked down the hallway, the rubber soles of his shoes squeaking softly against the polished white tiles. He carried a small bouquet of yellow roses—a stark, strange detail against the dark, imposing presence of a mafia kingpin.

He pushed the door open quietly.

The room was soft and quiet, filled only with the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor. Elena Marchetti lay in the center of the bed, her face pale, a thick white bandage wrapped neatly around the upper left side of her head. Her dark hair fell across the white pillow, and her breathing was deep and even.

Beside her bed, asleep in a small armchair with her shoes off and a warm fleece blanket wrapped around her shoulders, was little Sofia. She was holding her mother’s limp left hand in both of her tiny palms, even in her sleep refusing to let go.

Marco stood at the foot of the bed for a long moment, watching them.

The cold, violent rage that had driven him across the city for the past three hours slowly receded, replaced by a strange, heavy ache in his chest. For twenty years, Marco Salerno had lived in a world of numbers, territory, blood, and betrayal. He had built a fortress around himself, convincing his own mind that soft emotions were a liability that would get a leader killed.

Yet looking at this young mother and her child, he realized that his fortress was nothing more than a high-priced cage.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered softly. She let out a weak groan, her hand flexing slightly in her daughter's grip.

Sofia stirred immediately, her eyes popping open. "Mama?"

"Sofia..." Elena whispered, her voice dry and hoarse. She slowly turned her head, her hazel eyes clouded with confusion until they landed on the tall figure standing at the end of her bed. "Don... Don Marco?"

Marco stepped forward, setting the roses on the bedside table. "Don't try to sit up, Elena. The doctors said you have a severe concussion."

Elena’s hand moved frantically toward her daughter, pulling Sofia closer to her chest. Tears began to spill down her pale cheeks. "Sofia... oh God, Sofia, are you okay? Did he hurt you?"

"I'm okay, Mama," Sofia said, burying her face in Elena’s blanket. "Mr. Marco protected me. He said you were going to be okay."

Elena looked up at Marco, her eyes filled with an unbearable mix of relief, gratitude, and residual fear. "Vincent... he had papers, Marco. He said my husband owed him money from five years ago. He said if I didn't sign, he would take Sofia to an agency—"

"Vincent lied," Marco interrupted gently, his voice firm and steady. "Antonio never owed him a single dime. In fact, Vincent was stealing from the routes Antonio built for this family."

Elena blinked, processing the news through her hazy, pain-medicated mind. "Where is he?"

Marco reached out, gently patting Sofia’s head before answering. "He is being handled. You will never see him again, Elena. Nor will anyone else in this city."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to lift a weight she had been carrying for two agonizing years. "I don't know how to thank you... we have nothing to offer you, Don Marco."

"You don't need to offer me anything," Marco said. "Your husband was a good man who served this family with pride. But more than that... your daughter showed more courage tonight than half the lieutenants in my organization."

He pulled an envelope from his inner coat pocket and placed it beside the flowers on the nightstand.

"What is this?" Elena asked gently.

"It is the deed to a home in the coastal town of Amalfi," Marco explained. "It is fully staffed, secure, and far away from the city's noise. The Marchetti shipping line has been fully restructured. A professional management board will run the day-to-day operations, but all profits will be deposited directly into a trust for Sofia’s future. You never have to work in a kitchen again, Elena. You never have to worry about rent, or bills, or men like Vincent Rossi."

Elena looked at the envelope, then up at Marco, her lips parting in shock. "Marco... this is too much. I can't accept—"

"It is already done," Marco said firmly, leaving no room for argument. "The papers are filed with the high court. You and Sofia leave for Amalfi as soon as the doctors discharge you."

Sofia looked up from her mother’s chest, her dark eyes looking at Marco with a strange, solemn curiosity. "Are you coming with us, Mr. Marco?"

Marco froze. The question was simple, innocent, yet it hit him with the force of a physical blow.

He looked at Elena, whose eyes met his with a sudden, quiet intensity that made his throat feel tight. For months, he had seen her working in the estate gardens, seen her serving tea during meetings, and he had always maintained a strict, professional distance. He was the Don; she was a widow under his protection.

But in this quiet hospital room, bathed in the dim green glow of the heart monitor, that boundary felt fragile.

Before Marco could answer, the door behind him swung open abruptly.

Dominic stepped into the room, his expression dark and urgent. He didn't look at Elena or Sofia; he looked straight at Marco.

"Boss," Dominic said in a low tone. "We have a problem at the 5th Street warehouse."

Marco turned slowly. "What kind of problem?"

"Vincent's backer," Dominic said, stepping closer so the women couldn't hear. "He wasn't acting alone, Marco. We checked his personal cell phone records. Before he came to the cottage tonight, he made three calls to a private line in Milan."

Marco’s jaw tightened. "Who?"

Dominic swallowed hard. "Don Matteo Corvis. He's claiming Vincent was operating under his personal protection. Corvis’s men just surrounded the 5th Street warehouse. They're demanding Vincent be handed over immediately, or they cross the river into our territory."
