Chapter 4 - The Strike of the Vales

For forty-eight hours, the Vale Estate was transformed into a fortress. Private security personnel in dark suits patrolled the perimeter grounds with guard dogs, while a team of top-tier attorneys occupied the mansion's main dining room, turning it into a war room filled with laptops, legal briefs, and secure phone lines.
Lucia remained blissfully unaware of the storm raging outside. Evelyn spent hours in the sunroom teaching her how to play the grand piano, their laughter echoing through the halls. Seeing my daughter bonded with her great-grandmother filled my heart with a warmth I hadn't felt since my mother passed away.
On the afternoon of the second day, the heavy mahogany doors of the war room swung open.
Adrian walked in, holding a single leather-bound folder sealed with red wax. Beside him walked Dr. Aris and the head of our legal team, Sarah Vance.
I stood up instantly from the sofa, my hands clenching the fabric of my sweater. "The results?"
Dr. Aris broke the wax seal, opening the document. He looked up at me with a rare, genuine smile.
"The DNA comparison between Clara Bennett and Evelyn Vale demonstrates a 99.98% probability of a direct maternal granddaughter relationship," Dr. Aris announced clearly. "Furthermore, Lucia Bennett’s sample confirms a 99.99% match as a great-granddaughter. The bloodline is absolute."
A long, slow breath escaped my lungs, and tears spilled down my cheeks. Evelyn, sitting near the piano, let out a soft cry of joy, pressing her rosary beads against her lips.
"It's official," Sarah Vance, the attorney, declared. "Under the terms of the Vale Family Trust, Clara Bennett is legally recognized as Clara Vale, primary beneficiary of Rosalie Vale’s twenty-five percent estate share. Effective immediately."
Adrian walked over to me, handing me a sleek gold pen and a stack of legal documents. "Sign these, Clara. Once you do, you officially hold more voting power in the Vale Corporation than the entire Winthrop board combined."
I took the pen, my hand remarkably steady now. I signed my name—not as a helpless server living paycheck to paycheck, but as Clara Vale, my mother’s daughter.
"Now," Adrian said, a ruthless smile playing on his lips, "it's time to handle the Winthrops."
"What's the plan?" I asked.
"Celeste and her father called an emergency board meeting of the Boston Cultural Foundation for three o'clock today," Adrian explained. "They intend to use the platform to push their custody petition and publicly slander you before the court hears our DNA motion. They invited every major news outlet in New England."
Adrian checked his gold wristwatch. "It's two-fifteen. Let's go give them their exclusive."
An hour later, a motorcade of three black armored SUVs pulled up to the rear entrance of the Boston Symphony Hall, where the Cultural Foundation board meeting was being held.
I stepped out onto the pavement wearing a tailored emerald-green silk dress that Evelyn had selected for me, my hair styled in elegant waves, my mother's silver rose locket resting against my collarbone. Beside me walked Adrian, imposing and resolute, flanked by four security guards carrying the certified court documents.
We entered through the side doors, moving quietly down the carpeted hallway toward the main press auditorium.
Inside the auditorium, the flash of cameras was blinding. Celeste Winthrop stood at the main podium in a crisp white suit, flanked by her father Richard and a line of reporters.
"...and so we ask the public and the courts to stand with us in protecting the integrity of Boston’s philanthropic institutions from desperate opportunists," Celeste was saying into the microphones, her voice dripping with sorrowful theatricality. "We have petitioned the state to step in regarding the child's welfare—"
"That won't be necessary, Celeste," a voice rang out from the back of the auditorium.
The room went dead silent. Every camera, microphone, and reporter spun around in unison.
Adrian and I walked down the center aisle. The reporters began gasping, the shutter clicks creating a deafening hum.
Celeste froze at the podium, her face turning pale as paper. "Adrian? What is this?"
"This is the end of your lie," I said, stepping past Adrian and looking straight up at Celeste on the stage.
Richard Winthrop slammed his hand on the table. "Security! Remove these intruders!"
"Don't bother, Richard," Sarah Vance stepped forward, holding up a certified court order signed by the Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. "This is an official notice of certified DNA confirmation, alongside an immediate freeze order on all Winthrop Financial assets connected to the Vale Trust."
Pandemonium erupted in the auditorium. Reporters began shouting questions at once.
"Is she really a Vale?" "What about the custody petition?" "Is the engagement officially over?"
Adrian stepped onto the stage, taking the microphone directly from Celeste’s hand. He looked out at the sea of flashing cameras.
"For thirty-four years, my aunt Rosalie Vale lived in hiding to protect herself from greed and control," Adrian declared, his voice echoing powerfully through the hall. "Her daughter, Clara Vale, raised her child with honor, dignity, and grace, working honestly while others sought to steal what wasn't theirs."
Adrian turned to look directly at Celeste and Richard Winthrop. "Effective immediately, the Vale Corporation has terminated all financial partnerships with the Winthrop Group. Furthermore, forensic accounting teams have uncovered fourteen million dollars in illegal wire transfers from Vale subsidiary accounts to Richard Winthrop’s offshore holdings. Federal warrants have just been issued."
At that exact moment, the back doors of the auditorium swung open. Four uniformed federal agents from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division walked down the aisle, heading straight for Richard Winthrop.
Richard’s briefcase dropped to the floor with a heavy thud. "This... this is a mistake! Celeste, call the lawyers!"

Celeste backed away from the podium, horror twisting her face as two female agents approached her, placing her hands behind her back. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? I am Celeste Winthrop!"
"Not anymore," I said softly as she was led past me in handcuffs. "You're just a bully who picked the wrong little girl to push around."
