Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Gate

By sunrise the following morning, the world outside the Vale Estate had devolved into chaos.

The story had exploded across every major news network and social media platform. Headlines dominated the internet: Catering Server Interrupts Billionaire Gala with Secret Heir Dance, The Lost Vale Daughter Returns, and Winthrop-Vale Merger Collapses in Scandal.

Videos recorded by party guests showing six-year-old Lucia dancing in her borrowed blue dress had accrued over forty million views overnight. The internet was captivated by the fairytale narrative, but behind the closed doors of the Vale mansion, the reality was a battleground.

I stood by the window of the grand guest suite on the second floor, watching a swarm of news vans and paparazzi parked outside the wrought-iron perimeter gates. Lucia was sitting on the plush king-sized bed, happily eating pancakes served on silver platters by a young housemaid who treated her like a little princess.

"Mama, look!" Lucia chirped, holding up a berry. "They have strawberries that taste like real candy!"

I forced a smile, walking over to smooth her hair. "Eat up, sweetheart. We have a busy day today."

A quiet knock sounded at the door, and Adrian stepped inside. He had traded his tuxedo for a sharp navy suit, but his eyes showed he hadn't slept a single hour. He was carrying a sleek tablet and a folder of documents.

"The medical team from Massachusetts General Hospital has arrived," Adrian said, stepping close. "Dr. Aris is the Chief of Medical Genetics. He will handle the DNA swab personally to ensure there is zero chance of chain-of-custody tampering."

"Is all of this really necessary?" I asked softly, glancing at Lucia. "Richard Winthrop made it sound like... like I'm committing a crime just by being here."

"Richard Winthrop is terrified, Clara," Adrian said, his voice firm. "For the past ten years, the Winthrop family has been quietly siphoning funds from Vale Corporation subsidiaries through shell companies, assuming that without Rosalie’s twenty-five percent voting block, I wouldn't have total control to audit them. Your existence doesn't just threaten their social standing—it threatens to put Richard Winthrop in a federal prison."

He pulled out a small black velvet box from his coat pocket and handed it to me.

I opened it. Inside lay a delicate silver locket, tarnished around the edges, carved in the shape of a blooming rose.

My breath caught in my throat. I reached out, my fingers trembling as I touched the cold metal. "This... this was my mother’s. She lost it when I was twelve."

"It was found in Rosalie’s room the night she disappeared," Adrian corrected gently. "My grandmother kept it on her nightstand for thirty-four years. She wanted you to have it back."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I clicked the locket open. Inside was a tiny, faded photograph of a young Evelyn holding two little girls in matching white dresses. On the back, etched into the silver in tiny script, were the words: To my Rosalie, my falling star.

"She really was Rosalie Vale," I whispered, the final lingering thread of doubt dissolving completely. My quiet, self-sacrificing mother had carried the weight of an entire stolen life just to give me a chance at peace.

"She was," Adrian said. "And now it's time to bring her daughter and granddaughter home."

The DNA procedure was quick and painless. Dr. Aris took cotton swabs from the inside of my cheek and Lucia’s, placing them in sealed glass vials under the watchful eyes of three independent legal observers.

"Results will take forty-eight hours under expedited processing," Dr. Aris informed us, bowing slightly before exiting the room.

As soon as the doctor left, Adrian’s private secretary, a sharp woman named Elena, stepped into the room with a grave expression.

"Mr. Vale, we have a problem," Elena said, handing him her tablet. "Celeste Winthrop just launched a press conference from her family’s headquarters downtown."

Adrian tapped the screen, turning on the live broadcast.

Celeste stood behind a podium, flanked by her father and a high-profile celebrity lawyer. She was wearing a subdued black dress, looking pale and tearful for the cameras.

"I am heartbroken," Celeste declared into the microphones, her voice trembling with manufactured sorrow. "Not just for the destruction of my engagement, but for the Vale family, who are currently being manipulated by a highly sophisticated group of grifters. Our private investigators have uncovered troubling details about the woman calling herself 'Clara Bennett.'"

My blood ran cold. "What is she talking about?"

On the screen, Celeste raised a document. "Clara Bennett has spent the last five years living under severe financial distress. We have records showing she was sued for breach of contract by a former landlord, and more importantly, her daughter Lucia was born in a public facility without a registered father on the birth certificate. We believe this woman has targeted the vulnerable, grieving elderly matriarch Evelyn Vale in a desperate attempt to extort money to cover her mounting debts!"

"Turn it off," Adrian commanded, his voice shaking with fury.

"That's not all, sir," Elena added quietly. "Celeste’s legal team has just filed a emergency motion with the Suffolk County Family Court, requesting temporary protective custody of Lucia pending the outcome of the fraud investigation. They are alleging that Clara is an unfit mother who brought a minor into an unstable environment for financial gain."

I dropped the silver locket. It clattered against the floor.

"No," I gasped, my vision blurring with instant, paralyzing terror. "No, they can't take my daughter! They can't!"

"They won't," Adrian said, catching me by the shoulders, his grip like iron. "Look at me, Clara! Look at me!"

I looked into his dark eyes, wild with panic.

"No one is touching Lucia," Adrian vowed, his voice ringing with absolute power. "The Winthrops think they can play dirty in the court of public opinion? They forgot who built this city. Elena, call our legal team. File a counter-suit for malicious prosecution, defamation, and criminal harassment. And fetch my private security commander."

Adrian turned to me, his eyes burning with an intense, protective flame. "We are going to war, cousin. And the Winthrops are about to lose everything."
