Chapter 5 - The Truth Revealed

The smell of gasoline was overpowering inside the sealed laboratory. The blue flame of Dr. Blake’s lighter flickered violently, mere inches from the paper-stuffed burn barrel.

Vincent stopped in his tracks, raising his hands slowly. "Harrison. Think about what you're doing. If you set this fire, you die in here too. The doors lock automatically on fire alert."

"I don't care!" Blake screamed, his eyes wild with unhinged desperation. "My career is over! My reputation is destroyed! If I'm going down, I'm taking your family's future with me!"

I took a slow, calculated step sideways, drawing his attention away from Vincent.

"It wasn't just about money, was it, Dr. Blake?" I asked, keeping my voice steady, almost conversational.

Blake’s crazy eyes locked onto me. "What do you know about it?"

"I know how men like you think," I said gently, taking another tiny step forward. "You were brilliant once. But science moved faster than you. Your peers were getting the Nobel nominations, the massive international patents, the glory. You were getting older, trapped in a regional research clinic."

A muscle in Blake’s cheek twitched. I was striking the exact nerve of his vanity.

"You didn't just want a grant," I continued smoothly. "You created a synthetic neuro-inflammatory agent. Something undetectable by standard blood panels. You wanted to publish a ground-breaking paper revealing a 'newly discovered pediatric syndrome'—and then miraculously 'discover' the cure two years later. You were going to play God."

Blake let out a dry, sobbing laugh. "I was going to save them! I was going to be the hero who brought the Moretti twins back from the brink of death! I spent three years formulating that compound! It was masterpiece chemistry!"

"It was pathetic," Vincent snapped, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen.

While Blake was fixated on me, arguing about his twisted genius, Vincent had silently closed the distance between them.

Before Blake could react, Vincent lunged forward, grabbing Blake’s wrist with brutal precision and driving his arm upward. The lighter flew from the doctor's fingers, skimming across the linoleum floor and bouncing harmlessly into the far corner.

Blake shrieked, trying to claw at Vincent's eyes, but Vincent threw a devastating right hook that sent the silver-haired doctor crashing over a glass lab table. Equipment shattered, test tubes smashed, and Blake crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

"Claire! The hard drives!" Vincent yelled.

I ran straight to the desk, snatching the heavy master hard drive and the thick leather-bound research ledger out of the burn barrel before the gasoline ruined them. On the cover of the ledger, written in Blake’s precise hand, were the words: Project Aether: Chronic Pulmonary & Neurological Degeneration Protocol.

Within minutes, the distant wail of police sirens echoed up from the streets below. Vincent’s security team, along with the Hartford Police Department, flooded the fourth-floor corridor.

As officers hauled a handcuffed, bleeding Dr. Blake out of the laboratory, the Lead Detective approached Vincent and me.

"Mr. Moretti, we've secured the facility," the Detective said. "State medical examiners are already on their way to catalog the chemical agents found in his safe."

Vincent held out his hand, taking the research ledger from me and handing it to the Detective. "This book contains every dose, every chemical compound, and every lab result he used on my sons. Get this to the Chief of Toxicology at Boston Children's Hospital immediately."

The Detective nodded grimly. "He's never seeing the light of day again, Mr. Moretti. I promise you that."

Vincent turned to me. The harsh fluorescent lights of the corridor caught the tears forming in his dark eyes. He took my hands in his—his grip was warm, strong, and trembling slightly.

"We got it," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking. "We saved them."

"We did," I smiled, feeling a wave of overwhelming relief wash over me.

We flew back through the dissipating storm clouds as the first pink rays of dawn began to break over the Connecticut horizon. The dark, oppressing cloud that had hung over the Moretti estate for eighteen months was finally lifting.

When we landed, we rushed straight down to the subterranean safe room.

Vincent opened the heavy steel door. Lucas and Leo were awake, sitting up on a large velvet sofa wrapped in warm blankets, sipping warm milk that Mrs. Harper had brought them.

When the boys saw us, their pale faces lit up.

"Daddy! Miss Claire!" Leo called out, his voice stronger than it had been in months.

Vincent dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of his sons, holding them close against his chest as he wept softly. I stood by the doorframe, watching them, feeling a profound sense of peace settle into my heart.

Lucas looked over his father's shoulder, catching my eye. "Miss Claire? Is it time for the pillow fortress now?"

I laughed, wiping a tear from my eye. "It certainly is, buddy. It certainly is."
