Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Marble

Dr. Blake didn't panic. A man who had spent eighteen months systematically poisoning two little boys for profit did not lose his composure easily. Instead, his posture stiffened, and a cold, clinical sneer settled onto his features.

"I see," Blake said, looking back and forth between Vincent and me. "I was wondering how long it would take for an uneducated nanny to start jumping to ridiculous conclusions. Vincent, are you honestly letting this woman poison your mind with conspiracy theories?"

"We were in the basement, Harrison," Vincent said, taking a slow step forward. "We saw the pump. We saw the chemical container. And we saw your signature on the authorization log."

Blake let out a dry, chilling laugh. "Of course my signature is on it! That apparatus is an experimental bronchodilator delivery system. It is part of an advanced clinical trial designed to keep your sons' airways open while their neurological strength declines. I didn't inform you of the specific mechanical setup because you are a grieving, stressed father who needed results, not technical jargon!"

"Then what is the chemical name?" I demanded, crossing my arms. "If it's an FDA-approved clinical trial, you should have no problem giving us the exact pharmacological compound, the trial registration number, and the antidote."

Blake fixed his cold blue eyes on me. "My medical research is proprietary, Miss Morgan. I do not account to household servants. Vincent, if you tamper with that machinery or disrupt their therapy, their lungs will collapse within forty-eight hours. Is that a risk you are willing to take based on the amateur guesswork of a woman you hired five hours ago?"

It was a masterclass in psychological manipulation. He was weaponizing a father's deepest fear—the death of his children—against him.

I saw Vincent hesitate for a fraction of a second. The seed of doubt was a powerful toxin in itself.

"Vincent," I said softly, grabbing his arm. "Look at your sons."

Vincent looked back at the leather sofas. Lucas and Leo were both sitting up slightly, watching us with wide, clear eyes. They weren't gasping for air. They weren't gray. For the first time in months, they looked like children who were waking up from a long nightmare.

Vincent's hesitation vanished. He looked back at Blake, his eyes burning with absolute certainty. " Hand over your medical bag, Harrison. And your keys."

Blake took a step backward toward the heavy mahogany desk. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Vincent."

"Hand them over," Vincent repeated, his voice echoing through the vaulted library.

Instead of reaching for his keys, Blake reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and tapped the screen twice. "Security override," Blake said into the phone speaker. "Code Red at the main house."

Instantly, the heavy oak doors of the library burst open. Two massive men in dark tactical suits stepped into the room. They weren't Vincent's regular house staff; they were private security contractors hired by Dr. Blake’s research foundation, ostensibly to protect the "sensitive medical equipment" on the estate.

"Dr. Blake?" the lead guard asked, his hand resting on his belt.

"Mr. Moretti is experiencing a severe psychological breakdown due to stress," Blake said smoothly, stepping behind the two guards. "He is threatening my life and refusing vital medical treatment for his sons. Restrain him and Miss Morgan while I prepare the boys for emergency transfer to my private facility in Hartford."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Vincent!"

Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't become a billionaire by being weak.

"You're in my house, Harrison," Vincent said in a low, dangerous voice. He reached under the lip of the library desk and pressed a hidden button.

A loud, piercing klaxon blared through the mansion. Red emergency lights began flashing along the ceiling corridors. Within seconds, the heavy steel security shutters over the library windows began to lower, and the main double doors clicked into an electronic lock state.

"This estate is on total lockdown," Vincent announced, looking down at the two guards. "My private security team—former Special Forces—is currently surrounding this wing. Drop your weapons, or you will leave this property in body bags."

The two guards exchanged a nervous glance. They were paid well, but they weren't paid to die for a doctor's illegal trial. The lead guard slowly raised his hands and stepped away from Blake.

"Smart choice," Vincent cold-stated.

Dr. Blake’s face finally broke. The arrogant composure cracked, revealing a terrified, desperate predator. He backed up against the locked french doors, looking for an escape route.

"Why, Harrison?" Vincent asked, walking toward him like a predator stalking its prey. "Why my boys? I gave you tens of millions for your foundation!"

"Because tens of millions isn't enough!" Blake snarled, his voice high and sharp. "Your foundation money was going to expire next year! My clinical trial was failing! I needed a permanent, high-profile case of 'unexplainable chronic illness' to secure a fifty-million-dollar grant from European pharmaceutical investors! Your sons were the perfect test subjects—wealthy, isolated, and completely dependent on me!"

The sheer cruelty of his words hung in the air. He hadn't just poisoned them for money; he had used two innocent children as living lab rats to boost his own glory.

Before Vincent could reach him, Blake pulled a small, silver glass vial from his pocket and slammed it against the marble floor.

A thick, acrid cloud of white smoke erupted instantaneously, filling the library with a blinding, choking mist.

I coughed violently, shielding my face with my cardigan. "Lucas! Leo!" I screamed, dropping to my knees and crawling through the smoke toward the sofas.

Through the haze, I heard the sound of shattering glass as Blake used a heavy brass statue from the desk to smash through one of the floor-to-ceiling windows, escaping out into the stormy night.
