Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Pines

Night fell over the northern forest like a heavy black velvet curtain. Rain lashed through the tall pine trees, masking the sound of approaching engines.
Two miles from Rossi’s estate, three black sedans pulled off the main highway onto an abandoned logging road. Sean, Nina, Marcus, Carrie, and Raleigh stepped out into the freezing mud.
Carrie wore a thick wool coat over her clothes, her father’s wooden whistle held tightly between her teeth. Raleigh wore a tactical harness, but no leash—he walked beside her like a silent shadow.
"We’ve reached the outer perimeter," Nina reported, checking her thermal scope. "Four guard dogs—Dobermans—patrolling the south fence line with two armed handlers. If they spot us, the alarm goes off."
Sean looked down at Carrie. "This is your show, little girl. Tell us when to move."
Carrie didn't answer. She walked to the edge of the treeline, feeling the cold rain fall on her face. She closed her eyes—not that she needed them—and listened to the forest.
Through the rustle of wind in the pine needles and the drum beat of rain, she heard it: the restless, nervous panting of four dogs pacing the fence line forty yards away. They were hungry, tired, and strung out on stress.
Carrie brought the wooden whistle to her lips.
She didn't blow a loud note. She blew a long, low, resonant tone that mimicked the call of a pack leader gathering his pack at dusk. The sound drifted effortlessly through the damp forest air, cutting through the storm.
At the fence line, the four Dobermans stopped instantly. Their ears perked up. They didn't bark. They turned their heads in unison toward the dark woods.
Raleigh stepped out from the trees.
In the dim light of the compound floodlights, he looked massive—a mythical beast emerging from the gloom, covered in battle scars, walking with absolute, terrifying confidence.
The four guard dogs growled nervously, lowering their bodies into defensive stances. But as Raleigh drew closer, he didn't display aggression. He held his tail neutral, his ears forward, emitting a low, vibrating rumble that communicated absolute dominance without violence.
Behind him walked Carrie.
The handlers raised their rifles, bewildered by the sight of a massive hound walking out of the dark beside a small girl. "What the hell is that? Is that a bear?"
Before the handlers could raise the alarm, Raleigh let out a sharp, command-like bark.
The four Dobermans didn't attack Raleigh. They turned around and lunged directly at their handlers, dragging them to the muddy ground and pulling their rifles away before they could fire a single warning shot.

"Perimeter clear," Nina whispered in shock, looking through her scope. "My God... she turned his own pack against him."
Sean drew his weapon, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. "Move in. It’s time to settle a five-year debt."
