Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Code

The lieutenant backed up a step, dragging Carrie with him, his hand trembling on the trigger. "Stay back! I'll kill her! I swear to God I'll kill her!"

Raleigh didn't rush. He walked with a terrifying, slow rhythm that matched the cadence of Carrie’s song. Every step he took shook the dust from the concrete floor.

Sean emerged from behind a row of crates, his suit torn, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead, his pistol aimed straight at the lieutenant’s back. "You drop that gun, Miguel," Sean said calmly, "or I put a hole in your spine before you can pull the trigger."

"Shoot me and she dies!" Miguel screamed, his sanity snapping under the overwhelming pressure of Raleigh’s advance.

Raleigh stopped three feet away. He dropped his shoulder, placing his body low to the ground. He looked at Carrie.

Carrie stopped singing. In the silence that followed, she whispered a single word that no one in the room expected.

"Speak."

It wasn't a command to attack. It was a command she had practiced with her father’s hound years ago.

Raleigh let out a bark so loud, so concussive, and so violently deep that it vibrated through the metal bone structure of the entire building. The acoustic shockwave in the enclosed concrete space sounded like a shotgun going off eighteen inches from Miguel’s face.

Miguel flinched violently, his ears ringing, his balance instantly shattered by the deafening sound. In that split second of distraction, his grip on Carrie’s hair loosened.

Raleigh didn't bite Miguel’s throat. He launched his two-hundred-pound frame directly into the man’s chest, slamming him onto his back against the concrete floor. The gun flew from Miguel’s hand, clattering harmlessly into the dark.

Raleigh stood over the lieutenant, his massive paws pinned to the man’s shoulders, his jaws wide open, hover inches from the man's nose. Miguel froze, paralyzed by pure, unadulterated terror, feeling the hot, wet breath of the beast on his face.

Raleigh didn't bite down. He looked back at Carrie, waiting.

Carrie walked slowly forward through the dark, guided by the sound of Raleigh’s heavy breathing. She reached out, placing her hand on the dog’s head.

"Good boy," she whispered softly. "That’s enough."

Raleigh backed off, allowing Sean’s men to step in and zip-tie the terrified lieutenant.

Sean lowered his weapon, staring at the sight in absolute disbelief. He had spent his entire life believing that control was maintained through pain, money, and fear. Yet in front of him, a blind orphan had brought down a syndicate hit squad using nothing more than a song and a voice command.

"You're an impossible child," Sean said, wiping the blood from his brow as he walked over to her.

"No," Carrie said, bending down and finally picking up her wooden whistle from the dirt. "You're just blind, Mr. Sean. All of you are."
