Chapter 9 - The New Roots

Spring arrived six months later, transforming Ashgrove Street into a canopy of green leaves and blooming cherry blossoms.
The empty lot at number 40 was no longer a muddy eye-sore. Victor had kept his promise: it had been converted into a beautiful neighborhood park featuring manicured lawns, stone benches, a bubbling water fountain, and hundreds of vibrant yellow and orange marigolds planted in neat, geometric gardens.
The neighbors—simple, working-class families who had lived in fear during the days of the Silver Blade gang—now gathered in the park every afternoon. Children played safely on the grass, while old men played chess on the wooden tables.
Kayla sat on a stone bench under the shade of a weeping cherry tree, watching the neighborhood children run through the grass. She wore a simple linen dress and a sun hat, her skin warm and healthy under the afternoon sun.
Milo lay on the cool grass at her feet, his gray snout resting on his paws. He was older now, his movements a little slower, but his eyes were bright, content, and completely free of stress.
A young woman pushing a baby stroller walked past, stopping to wave warmly. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Miller!"
"Good afternoon, Sarah," Kayla smiled back. "How is little Lucas doing?"
"He slept through the whole night for the first time!" the woman laughed happily. "This park has been a lifesaver for us. We're so lucky you moved to our street."
"I'm the lucky one, Sarah," Kayla said softly.
After the woman walked on, Leo stepped out from the walking path, wearing plain khaki trousers and a polo shirt. He carried two iced teas, handing one to Kayla as he sat on the bench beside her.
"The city council officially approved the neighborhood watch charter today, Boss," Leo reported with a small smile. "Not that we need it. The precinct captain told me Ashgrove Street has had a zero percent crime rate for six straight months. The lowest in the entire state."
"That's wonderful news, Leo," Kayla said, taking a sip of her iced tea. "And how are you adjusting to being a 'community coordinator' instead of a tactical commander?"
May you like
Leo chuckled, looking out at the children playing near the fountain. "It's quieter. My blood pressure has dropped twenty points. I actually took up gardening last week."
"You always were a softie at heart," Kayla teased gently.
