Chapter 8 - The Price of Peace

By 4:00 AM, the rain had finally stopped, leaving Ashgrove Street bathed in the pale, ethereal glow of pre-dawn twilight.

The black Suburbans were gone. Dominic Vance was on a ship leaving the harbor, his shadow wiped clean from the city's power grid forever.

Victor Vance stood on Kayla's porch, looking down at the silver tag in his hand. He pressed a tiny hidden latch on the edge of the metal casing; the coin popped open, revealing a micro-sized optical encryption chip embedded inside the steel.

"Three hundred million dollars," Victor murmured softly, staring at the tiny piece of hardware. "And master control over every dock from Maine to Florida."

He looked up at Kayla, who was leaning against the porch railing, sipping a fresh cup of coffee. Milo sat beside her, yawning lazily in the crisp morning air.

"You gave this to me," Victor said, genuine confusion in his eyes. "You could have taken this key, unlocked that vault, and lived like royalty in any capital in the world. Why give it to me?"

"Because power is a prison, Victor," Kayla said gently. "Richard spent thirty years carrying that three hundred million dollars like a milestone around his neck. He couldn't sleep without a gun under his pillow. He couldn't eat a meal without worrying if his cook had been bribed. He died in a hospital bed surrounded by bodyguards, but he was utterly alone."

She took a slow sip of her coffee, looking out over the quiet, peaceful street.

"I don't want a vault in Boston," she continued. "I want to plant marigolds. I want to wake up at eight in the morning, drink my coffee, and take my dog for a walk without looking over my shoulder. You want the empire, Victor? It's yours. But the price is what we agreed on."

Victor nodded slowly. "Ashgrove Street is an untouchable sanctuary. No gang, no mob, no corporate interest will ever touch a single stone on this road. My firm will maintain a discreet, permanent security detail two blocks away to ensure your peace."

He closed the metallic tag, tucked it safely into his inner jacket pocket, and extended his gloved hand toward her.

"Thank you, sister-in-law," Victor said, his tone filled with absolute, genuine reverence.

Kayla took his hand, giving it a firm, steady shake. "Goodbye, Victor. Don't come back unless you're bringing dog treats."

Victor let out a soft laugh, turned, and walked down the brick path to his Maybach, leaving Ashgrove Street to the morning birds.
