Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Silence returned to the sanctuary, heavy and absolute, broken only by the steady patter of rain against the roof and the distant, approaching wail of police sirens.
Jared dropped his weapon to his side. He sprinted down the hallway, ignoring the bleeding body of Victor, ignoring Miles, ignoring everything in the world until he reached Willa.
He grabbed her shoulders, his hands shaking violently as his storm-grey eyes swept over her body, searching frantically for blood, for wounds, for any sign of harm.
"Are you hurt? Did he touch you? Willa, speak to me!" Jared begged, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never shown in his entire life.
Willa gently raised her hands, wrapping them around his rain-slicked face. "I'm okay, Jared. I'm completely okay."
Jared let out a broken, shuddering breath, pulling her violently into his chest. He buried his face in her wet hair, wrapping his arms around her so tightly she could barely breathe. "I was too late... I almost lost you..."
"You didn't lose me," Willa whispered, holding him just as tightly. She looked over his shoulder at Brendan, who was currently being cussed out and handcuffed by two arriving police officers who had rushed into the building. "It’s over, Jared. It’s finally over."
An hour later, the sanctuary was filled with flashing red and blue lights.
Captain Miller—Jared’s high-ranking police contact—handled the scene personally. Victor’s body was quietly removed, while Brendan was loaded into a heavily armored medical transport, bound for a maximum-security prison ward where he would spend the rest of his natural life.
Because the entire incident was officially documented as a armed home-invasion defense, Willa and Jared were completely cleared of any wrongdoing.
As the last police car pulled away down the gravel driveway, the night sky began to clear, revealing a faint, golden streak of dawn breaking over the eastern horizon.
Miles, his shoulder neatly bandaged by Willa, sat on the porch steps, drinking a hot cup of coffee and tossing a tennis ball for Titan, who happily fetched it over and over again.
Jared and Willa stood at the edge of the sanctuary's wooden fence, looking out over the misty green fields of their property.
"I'm stepping down," Jared said suddenly, his hands tucked into his dark trousers.
Willa turned her head to look at him in shock. "What?"
Jared kept his eyes on the horizon. "I gave control of the city operations to Miles and the board this morning. I'm pulling all my capital out of the street businesses. Legitimate holdings only."
He turned to face her, his storm-grey eyes bright and clear in the early morning light.
"I built an empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe," Jared said softly, reaching out to slide his fingers through hers. "But standing in that hallway tonight, realizing I almost lost you... I realized that power means nothing if I don't have a soul to share it with."
Willa felt tears prickling her eyes, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming joy. "Are you telling me the grand Mafia Boss of New York is retiring to run a dog rescue?"
Jared smiled—a real, radiant, devastatingly handsome smile that transformed his fierce face into something breathtakingly human.

"If the boss of the rescue will have me," Jared whispered.
Willa stepped into his arms, kissing him deeply under the golden light of the morning sun. "I think we can negotiate your employment."
