Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

"If you kill him, you're no better than he is!"
Willa’s voice echoed sharply through the grand hallway, stopping Jared in his tracks.
Miles stood near the entrance of the hallway, his face grave, while two guards held Brendan down on the floor. Brendan was weeping, his face covered in blood and sweat, shivering violently beneath the terrifying shadow of Jared Kensington.
Jared turned slowly to face Willa. His storm-grey eyes were dark, filled with a primal, violent storm that threatened to consume everything in the room. "He broke into my home. He pointed a gun at you. He touched you."
"And I stopped him!" Willa screamed, stepping closer to Jared, refusing to back down despite the lethal aura radiating from him. "Titan and I stopped him! If you murder him in cold blood right now, you prove that everything he said about you is true! That I just traded one violent master for another!"
The word master struck Jared like a physical blow.
His jaw twitched sharply. For three agonizing seconds, the air in the penthouse was thick with tension. Miles held his breath, staring at his boss, fully aware that Jared had executed men for far lesser offenses than stepping into his home.
Jared walked up to Willa until he was standing inches from her. He looked down into her tear-streaked face, seeing the absolute terror and fierce defiance burning in her brown eyes.
"You think I'm like him?" Jared asked softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying, restrained rage.
"You're acting like him!" Willa choked out, a fresh tear sliding down her cheek. "You're deciding who lives and dies because you think you own everything in this room! If you do this, Jared... I will never look at you again. I will never touch Titan again. I will starve myself in that room until you carry my corpse out of here!"
Jared stared at her, his chest heaving heavily beneath his blood-stained shirt.
Slowly, the storm in his eyes began to recede, leaving behind a profound, dark exhaustion. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting out a ragged breath.
When he opened them, he turned his head toward Miles.
"Call the police," Jared commanded coldly.
Miles blinked in absolute shock. "Boss... the police?"
"You heard me," Jared growled, not taking his eyes off Willa. "Call Captain Miller. Tell him we have an intruder who broke into a private residence with an illegal firearm and attempted aggravated assault. Make sure he gets twenty years in Sing Sing without parole."
Brendan let out a sob of relief, but the guards roughly yanked him to his feet, dragging him toward the private elevator.
"He won't touch a day less than twenty years, Miss Thornton," Miles added softly, offering Willa a brief, respectful nod before following the guards down the hall.
The grand living room fell dead silent once more.
Titan walked over to Willa, pressing his large head against her hip. Willa let out a long, shuddering sob, her legs finally giving out completely. She sank to the floor, wrapping her arms tightly around Titan’s thick neck, burying her face in his silver fur.
Jared remained standing above her. Slowly, carefully, he dropped to one knee beside her. He didn't touch her—he knew better than to reach for a wounded animal—but he stayed close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body.
"He's gone, Willa," Jared said gently, his voice softer than she had ever heard it before. "He will never hurt you again. I promise you on my life."
Willa lifted her head, looking at him through blur of tears. "Why did you bring me here, Jared? Really? It wasn't just for Titan, was it?"
Jared looked down at his own bruised knuckles, then back at her face.
"Six months ago, I was shot in Queens," Jared said quietly. "My men took me to a dirty back-alley doctor. I lost half my blood. While I was lying on that table, floating between life and death, I heard a news report on a small TV in the room. A story about a girl in Brooklyn who sat in a dark cage for twelve hours with a traumatized, violent K9 dog until he let her heal him."
He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a tear sliding down her cheek. His touch was feather-light, shockingly gentle for a man whose hands carried so much death.
"I spent my whole life surrounded by people who only want my power, my money, or my blood," Jared whispered. "When Titan stopped eating, I knew the vets couldn't save him because they didn't care. I needed someone who looked at broken things and didn't see weakness... someone who saw worth."

Willa stared at him, her heart beating a frantic, wild rhythm in her chest. "I'm not a miracle worker, Jared. I'm just a broken girl trying to survive."
"You're not broken, Willa," Jared said firmly, his thumb brushing over her lip. "You're the strongest thing in this godforsaken city."
