Chapter 5 - THE HUNT FOR VANESSA

The fallout from the Metropolitan Healthcare Gala was catastrophic.
By midnight, the board of Whitmore Enterprises held an emergency teleconference without inviting Richard or Preston. By 2:00 AM, the board voted unanimously to strip Preston of all titles, terminate his employment, and issue a public statement fully backing Emily Saint Claire.
By morning, police cars were parked outside the Whitmore family estate.
Preston sat in the back of his Mercedes, parked on a dark side street near the marina, sweating profusely. His father had been taken in for questioning regarding corporate tax evasion, and Preston knew his own arrest warrant was being signed at that very moment.
He had one option left: flight.
He grabbed his phone and dialed Vanessa.
"Pick up, pick up, damn it!" he hissed.
On the third ring, she answered. "Preston? Where are you?! My apartment is surrounded by reporters! My Instagram account is getting thousands of death threats every minute!"
"Listen to me, Vanessa," Preston said desperately. "Get your passport. Meet me at the private docks in harbor five. The boat—The Cherry Red—is still registered under your shell company. They haven't seized it yet! We take the boat, we head to the Bahamas, we use the offshore cash!"
"The offshore cash?" Vanessa’s voice sounded strange, hollow. "Preston... what cash?"
Preston froze. "What are you talking about? The two million in the Nassau account! The login credentials in your safe!"
There was a long pause on the line.
"Vanessa?!" Preston screamed into the phone.
"I'm sorry, Preston," Vanessa whispered. "Two hours ago, two men in dark suits came to my apartment. They had records of everything. They told me if I cooperated with Mr. Saint Claire’s attorneys, they wouldn't name me as a co-conspirator in the fraud case. They gave me an immunity agreement."
Preston felt his blood run cold. "You... you sold me out?"
"You promised me I was going to be the mistress of the biggest hospital empire in the state!" Vanessa suddenly shouted, her voice laced with venom. "You told me your wife was a nobody! You lied to me! You're broke, Preston! You're a disgraced criminal! Why would I go to jail for you?!"
"Vanessa, you kicked her!" Preston roared. "You started this whole damn thing!"
"And you watched!" she screamed back. "You stood there like a coward and let me do it because you thought you were invincible! Goodbye, Preston."
The line went dead.
Preston stared at his phone screen. He slammed his hands against the steering wheel, screaming until his throat felt raw.
He had lost his job. He had lost his legacy. He had lost his wife, his son, his family name—and now, the mistress he had destroyed his life for had traded him for her own freedom.
Sirens echoed in the distance.
Preston turned his key in the ignition and slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing down the road toward the highway, driving blindly into the fog.
Meanwhile, back at the Saint Claire Estate, Emily sat in the nursery.
The room had been completely renovated over the past week. Soft yellow light warmed walls painted in delicate watercolor murals of birch trees and mountain trails. A handmade wooden crib sat near the window.
Raymond stood at the door, watching her gently fold a tiny white baby jumpsuit.
"Vanessa Cross just signed the affidavit," Raymond said softly. "She’s turning over all communications, wire receipts, and texts between her and Preston. The District Attorney has officially filed charges against Preston for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and reckless endangerment."
Emily paused, holding the little cotton garment in her hands.
"And Preston?" she asked.
"He fled," Raymond replied. "He hit a state police blockade near the county line an hour ago. He blew a tire, spun out into a ditch. He’s currently in custody at the central precinct. Uninjured, but locked up."
Emily closed her eyes and took a long, deep breath.
For the first time in six years, the pressure in her chest—that constant, suffocating weight of trying to fit into a family that despised her—was entirely gone.
"How are you feeling, Em?" Raymond asked gently, walking over and placing a warm hand on her shoulder.
May you like
Emily looked out the window at the morning sun rising over the estate gardens.
"I feel like I can finally breathe, Uncle," she said. "Now... let's finish building this hospital the right way."
