Chapter 3 - THE REAL ESTATE OF SILENCE

The Saint Claire Estate did not look like the grandiose, ostentatious mansions owned by the new money in the city’s western hills. It was situated behind iron gates on a three-hundred-acre estate surrounded by ancient oak trees and stone walls that had stood since the late 1800s.

When Preston arrived in his black Mercedes—the only car he had left that hadn't been repossessed by the corporate fleet manager—he felt small.

Alongside him was his father, Richard, and their senior family attorney, Harold Vance. Vanessa had been left behind at the hotel, forbidden from attending by strict order of Raymond’s legal counsel.

The double oak doors opened before they even stepped off the gravel driveway. A butler in an understated grey suit bowed slightly. "Mr. Whitmore. This way."

They were led into a massive library lined with thousands of leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over a pristine formal garden.

Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was not Raymond, but Emily.

She wore an elegant midnight-blue dress that draped softly over her belly. Her hair was swept up, revealing her slender neck and a simple diamond pendant that had belonged to her mother. There was no trace of the quiet, timid woman who had spent six years cooking dinner for Preston, waiting up late while he pretended to be at "late board meetings."

Beside her stood Raymond, looking relaxed, holding a cup of black tea. Sitting in the leather armchairs were three men in suits—the top corporate litigation attorneys in the country.

Preston took a breath, trying to summon his old charm. "Emily... God, you look beautiful. Look, can we talk alone? Just husband and wife? Without all these lawyers?"

Emily didn't answer immediately. She picked up a delicate porcelain teacup, took a sip, and set it down quietly on its saucer.

"Sit down, Preston," she said.

The authority in her voice was so absolute that Preston’s knees instinctively buckled, and he sat in the chair across from her.

"Harold," Raymond spoke to the Whitmore family lawyer. "I suggest you open the folder in front of you."

Attorney Vance opened a thick manila folder resting on the table. As he scanned the pages, his face visibly paled. "This... this is..."

"It’s a complete record of Preston’s fraudulent transactions over the past four years," Emily said calmly. "Every wire transfer to shell companies in Panama. Every fake invoice for medical supplies that were never delivered. Every diamond necklace purchased with money meant for the pediatric charity fund."

Preston swallowed hard. "Emily, please! I did it for us! I was trying to build a safety net for our child!"

"You bought a ninety-foot yacht named The Cherry Red," Emily said, her eyes locking onto his. "Named after Vanessa’s favorite lipstick. Don't lie to me, Preston. It's embarrassing."

Richard Whitmore slammed his hand on his knee. "Emily! We admit my son made mistakes! Terrible, foolish mistakes! But we are family! Think of the child you’re carrying! Do you want your baby’s father to go to prison?"

Emily looked at her father-in-law. "My child will grow up knowing that his mother stood up for herself. He will not grow up under the shadow of men who treat women like disposable toys."

"What do you want?" Preston asked, his voice cracking, all his confidence completely dismantled. "What do you want from me, Emily?"

Emily motioned to her attorney, who pushed a document across the polished wood.

"Here are our terms," Emily said.

Preston Whitmore surrenders all parental rights to the unborn child, agreeing to sole custody for Emily, with no visitation rights until a court-ordered psychological evaluation and substance abuse program are completed.

The Whitmore family relinquishes all remaining equity in the Whitmore-Saint Claire Medical Center. The name 'Whitmore' will be removed from all buildings, stationery, and public assets by the end of the week.

Preston signs an immediate, uncontested divorce agreement, waiving any right to alimony, marital assets, or Saint Claire family wealth.

In exchange, the Saint Claire Trust will not file criminal embezzlement charges against Preston—on the condition that he leaves the state within thirty days.

Preston gaped at her. "Leave the state?! Strip my name off the hospital?! Emily, that’s my legacy! My grandfather built that place!"

"Your grandfather built a reputation," Raymond interjected coldly. "You turned it into a brothel and a piggy bank. You have ten minutes to sign, Preston. If you don't, the federal prosecutor receives the flash drive currently sitting on my assistant’s desk."

"You can't do this!" Preston stood up, his face contorted with rage. "I’m a Whitmore! We own this city!"

May you like

Emily stood up slowly, placing both hands on her stomach. Her gaze was unfazed.

"You used to own a illusion, Preston," Emily whispered. "And today, the illusion ended."
