Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Over the next two weeks, Grayhaven House transformed from a quiet, decaying fortress into an armed citadel.

Damian’s health made a miraculous recovery, driven by a fierce, renewed vitality that baffled Dr. Evans. The poison was completely flushed from his system, and within days, he was back at the head of the long mahogany conference table in the west wing, reviewing shipping manifests, cutting ties with compromised syndicate capos, and consolidating his absolute control over the eastern seaboard.

I had been officially promoted from maid to executive manager of the estate, moving out of the cramped servants’ quarters into a spacious suite on the second floor just down the hall from the master wing.

Lila had quickly become the unofficial princess of Grayhaven House. Even the burly, scarred enforcers who patrolled the hallways would soften when they saw her coming, dropping down to one knee to let her hand sign a greeting or offering her small pieces of candy saved from their rations. Damian spent an hour every evening sitting with her by the fireplace, learning the basic sign language alphabet so he could communicate with her directly without needing me to translate.

It was a strange, impossible domesticity existing right on top of a criminal empire.

“Maroni is moving his personal security detail from Chicago,” Viktor announced, slapping a thick dossier onto Damian’s desk. I stood nearby, reviewing the weekly household provisioning budget while Damian poured two glasses of scotch. “Intelligence says they’re planning a direct strike on our primary export warehouse down at Pier 44 this Friday night.”

Damian didn't look up from his tactical maps. He picked up the glasses, handing one to me before taking a sip of his own.

“Maroni thinks I’m still recovering from the poison,” Damian said, a dangerous, cold smile playing across his lips. “He thinks he’s walking into an ambush of my weakness. He’s going to find out why they used to call me the Reaper of Baltimore.”

“You’re going to lead the strike team yourself?” I asked, my voice tightening with a sudden, unbidden surge of worry.

Damian stopped, turning to look at me. The amber light of the desk lamp caught the sharp lines of his face. “I have to, Elena. Some debts can only be settled in person.”

“Don’t get reckless,” I said, stepping closer, my voice dropping into an intimate register. “You survived a poison cup and a bedroom ambush. Don’t throw your life away on a dock shootout just to prove a point.”

Damian chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that warmed the cold room. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing against my cheek. “Are you worried about me, Elena?”

“I’m worried about what happens to Lila if the man keeping us safe gets himself killed,” I parried smoothly, though my pulse raced at the contact.

“Fair enough,” Damian murmured, his thumb lingering on my cheekbone for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before he pulled back. “I promise you, I’ll be back before sunrise.”
