Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Grayhaven

Six months later, the storm outside Grayhaven House was nothing more than a gentle autumn drizzle, tapping softly against the glass of the master suite windows.

The estate had changed. The armed patrols were still there, ensuring our security, but the heavy shroud of fear and death had lifted entirely. The east wing was no longer a forbidden tomb; its doors stood wide open, welcoming the sunlight and the sound of children's laughter.

In the sunroom overlooking the sprawling gardens, Lila sat at a small wooden table with a box of crayons, carefully coloring a picture of a yellow house with two stick figures standing by the door.

I stood by the window, watching her from across the room, feeling the warm, steady weight of Damian’s arm wrap around my waist from behind. He rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

“You’re quiet today,” Damian murmured softly.

“I was just thinking about that Tuesday morning,” I admitted, turning slightly in his embrace to look up at him. “When I broke the rules and brought Lila into the east wing. If I had known who you were... if I had known what was waiting behind that door... I probably would have run the other way.”

Damian smiled, pressing a warm kiss to my temple. “If you had run away, I would have tracked you down across the entire state of Maryland. You and that little girl were the best thing that ever happened to me, Elena.”

“You saved us, Damian,” I whispered, resting my hand over his heart—the heart that Lila had healed with a single touch.

“No, Elena,” Damian corrected me gently, pulling me flush against his chest as the rain tapped a steady, peaceful rhythm against the glass. “You saved each other. And you finally gave me a home worth fighting for.”

Across the sunroom, Lila looked up from her crayons, flashed us a bright, gap-toothed grin, and held up her drawing so we could see. Written across the top in wobbly, childish handwriting—helped along by a reformed mafia boss who was learning to spell—were the words: OUR FAMILY.

The storm had finally passed, and the sun was rising over Grayhaven House at last.
