Chapter 5 - THE DAWN OF A NEW EMPIRE

Six months later.
The spring sun washed over the grand glass-and-steel terrace of the Moretti estate, turning the surface of Lake Michigan into a shimmering sheet of gold.
On the manicured lawn below, seven-month-old Leo was sitting in a bright red wagon, laughing hysterically as a golden retriever licked his bare toes.
Sophie stood on the terrace, wearing a light cashmere sweater, holding a cup of fresh coffee as she watched the scene with a heart that felt completely healed. The scars of the past hadn't vanished, but they had transformed into something meaningful.
Footsteps approached from behind. Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.
“You’re smiling,” Dominic’s voice murmured near her ear.
Sophie leaned back against him, resting her head on his shoulder. “I was just thinking about how insane you were to kidnap a waitress.”
“Best business decision I ever made,” Dominic chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her neck. He turned her around in his arms, looking down at her with an expression of absolute devotion that he reserved for no one else in the world.
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and flipped it open. Inside sat a magnificent, custom-designed ring featuring a rare pink diamond surrounded by interlocking platinum bands.
“I don't want you as my nanny anymore, Sophie,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping into a tender, solemn register. “And I don't want you as a guest in my house. I want you as my wife, and as Leo’s mother in every way that counts.”
Sophie looked down at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had terrified her, challenged her, and ultimately opened his heavily guarded heart to her.
“You’re proposing in the middle of a Sunday morning with a golden retriever eating grass and a baby covered in drool?” Sophie teased, though her eyes shone with happy tears.
“I’m a mob boss, Sophie. I don't do romantic sunset clichés,” Dominic smiled, sliding the ring onto her finger. “I do permanence.”

Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, certain kiss as the morning wind carried the laughter of their son across the sunlit estate.
The storm had passed. The empire was secure. And for the first time in her life, Sophie knew she was exactly where she belonged.
