Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF LAKE SHORE DRIVE

The illusion of peace shattered four days later, just as the sun was beginning to set over the frozen waters of Lake Michigan.

It started with a sharp, piercing alarm echoing through the estate’s security grid.

Sophie was in the nursery feeding Leo when the heavy oak door flew open. Dominic burst into the room, holding a heavy Glock pistol, his face carved from cold stone.

“Get down,” Dominic ordered, grabbing Sophie by the arm and pulling her and the bassinet into the reinforced safe room built into the master suite wall.

“What’s happening?” Sophie’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped animal.

“The Russian syndicate,” Dominic said through gritted teeth, typing a digital code into the heavy steel wall panel to lock it. “They breached the perimeter gates. They think I’m vulnerable because of the heir.”

Outside the heavy steel door, the muffled pop of suppressed gunfire echoed through the mansion. Shouts, breaking glass, and the heavy thud of combat boots sounded like thunder overhead.

Leo started to whimper at the sudden noise.

“Shh, shh, it’s okay,” Sophie whispered frantically, pressing the baby against her chest, rocking him desperately as adrenaline flooded her veins.

Dominic stood guard by the reinforced door, his gun raised, his eyes locked on the digital security monitor displaying the hallway outside. Three of his guards were down in the foyer; two were holding the second-floor stairwell.

“If they breach this room,” Dominic said without looking back, his voice terrifyingly calm, “take Leo through the tunnel behind the bookshelf. It leads to the boathouse on the lake. A speedboat is waiting with a full tank. Drive north toward Wisconsin. Don't look back.”

Sophie’s eyes widened in horror. “And you?”

“I’m going to stay and finish what they started,” Dominic replied coldly.

“No!” Sophie yelled, stepping forward and grabbing his arm.

Dominic whipped around, surprised by the fierce fire in her eyes.

“I didn't run away from a dying baby in a hospital room, and I’m not running away from a fight in a mansion!” Sophie shouted, her voice echoing in the concrete safe room. “You think you have to carry every single burden alone, Dominic? That’s not strength, that’s cowardice! You want to protect your son? Then you stay alive to raise him!”

Dominic stared at her, stunned into silence by the sheer ferocity of a woman he had written off as a quiet, broken waitress just a week ago.

Before he could answer, the security monitor flared red.

Two masked men in tactical gear had blown the lock off the outer master bedroom door and were approaching the safe room with a heavy thermal breaching charge.

“Get behind the concrete pillar,” Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into absolute lethal authority.

Sophie pulled Leo tight against her chest, crouching behind the reinforced pillar in the corner of the vault.

BOOM.

The steel door shuddered violently as the explosive charge blew the external locking mechanism. Smoke and dust billowed into the vault.

Before the smoke could clear, Dominic moved with terrifying, predatory speed. Two suppressed shots cracked through the small room in rapid succession.

Thump. Thump.

Two masked figures collapsed heavily onto the threshold of the safe room, lifeless.

Dominic lowered his smoking weapon, his breathing slightly elevated, and turned back toward Sophie and the baby.

The hallway outside fell deathly quiet. The backup security team had finally neutralized the remaining infiltrators.

Dominic holstered his gun, walked over to Sophie, and dropped to one knee. He gently placed his hand over Sophie’s trembling hand where she clutched Leo.

“You called me a coward,” Dominic murmured, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.

May you like

“You are, if you think dying is easier than living,” Sophie breathed, tears of adrenaline and relief finally spilling over.

Dominic reached up, gently wiping a streak of soot from her cheek. “I spent my whole life building a fortress out of stone and blood, Sophie. But tonight, I realized something. A fortress doesn't mean anything if there’s no one inside to share the warmth.”
