Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Estate

The estate’s wine cellar was built thirty feet beneath the limestone foundations of the main mansion, accessible through a heavy oak door behind the kitchen pantry. It was cold, dark, and lined with thousands of vintage bottles—a place where no sound from the ballroom above could ever penetrate.

I slipped down the stone stairs, my footsteps silent.

At the bottom of the stairs, the heavy metal security door clicked open. Marcus Cole stepped through, followed by a tall woman carrying a heavy black forensic case and two tactical operators in plain clothes.

Marcus was forty-five, with a shaved head, a thick beard, and eyes that had seen combat on three continents. When he saw me, his jaw set grimly.

"Boss," Marcus said, stepping forward to shake my hand with a grip that could crush iron. "You look like hell."

"I've been better, Marcus," I said, offering a faint, tired smile. "I owe you an apology. You told me six months ago that Vanessa Hale’s background checks were flagged."

"We can trade apologies later, Julian," Marcus said, turning to the woman beside him. "This is Dr. Aris Thorne. She’s the chief forensic toxicologist for my firm."

I pulled the two sterile vials from my coat pocket and handed them to Dr. Thorne. "This is the broth and the 'nerve supplement' she just tried to feed me."

Dr. Thorne didn't waste time with words. She immediately set her heavy case on a wooden tasting table, opened a portable mass spectrometer, and used a sterile pipette to extract three drops from the supplement vial.

The machine hummed, its digital display flashing as it analyzed the molecular structure.

For three minutes, the cellar was completely silent. The only sound was the low hum in my ears—a hum that reminded me, second by second, of the poison already circulating in my body.

Dr. Thorne stared at the readout screen, her eyes widening in horror.

"My God, Mr. Mercer," she whispered, looking up at me. "Do you know what this is?"

"Auditox-4?" I guessed cold-bloodedly.

Dr. Thorne blinked in surprise. "Yes. Combined with concentrated organophosphate compounds. It’s a targeted neurotoxin. It bypasses the blood-brain barrier and attacks the cranial nerves, specifically the vestibulocochlear nerve. In small doses, it destroys hearing over months. In this concentration..." She held up the vial. "...this single bottle contains enough to cause massive respiratory arrest within forty-eight hours."

Marcus swore under his breath, his hand dropping instinctively toward his concealed holster. "She isn't just trying to disable you, Julian. She’s killing you."

"She wanted it to look like a sudden, fatal complication of my 'autoimmune disorder' right after the engagement," I said, my voice dropping into an ice-cold register. "And her father was going to step in with my signed power of attorney to seize voting control of Mercer Ridge before my body was even cold."

"We call the FBI right now," Marcus said, pulling out his secure terminal. "We lock down the estate, arrest Vanessa, her father, and the chef."

"No," I said firmly, reaching out to press Marcus’s hand down.

Marcus frowned. "Julian, they are poisoning you! Every hour you delay—"

"If we call the police right now," I explained, looking Marcus dead in the eye, "the Hale family’s high-priced lawyers will post bail before morning. They’ll claim Chef Laurent acted alone. They’ll frame Nora, or say it was a bad batch of supplements from an overseas vendor. Vanessa will walk away, hire another assassin, and spend the next five years tying me up in corporate lawsuits while my health continues to fail."

"Then what do you want to do?" Marcus asked.

"I want them to commit the crime on camera, in front of two hundred witnesses," I said, a lethal, quiet confidence filling my chest. "I want Arthur Hale to execute the fake power of attorney documents live on my estate network. And then I want to destroy them so completely they never see the sun again."

I turned to Dr. Thorne. "Can you synthesize a harmless compound that looks and smells identical to this broth?"

"I have saline, food starch, and inactive organic compounds in my kit," Dr. Thorne replied instantly. "I can replicate the exact visual and chemical density of that soup in six minutes."

"Do it," I ordered. "Marcus, I need your men to hack the estate’s primary AV system. When I give the signal during the engagement toast... I want every screen, every projector, and every speaker in that ballroom broadcasting what I’m about to do."

Marcus grinned—a dark, dangerous smile that showed his white teeth. "Now that sound like the Julian Mercer I used to work for. What’s the signal, Boss?"

May you like

I looked up toward the ceiling, where two hundred unsuspecting guests were waiting for the host to cut his engagement cake.

"The signal," I said softly, "is when I raise my champagne glass to my beautiful fiancée."
