Chapter 4 - The Battle of 5th Avenue

The rain had returned to Manhattan, turning 5th Avenue into a chaotic sea of flashing blue lights, screaming pedestrians, and honking yellow cabs.

Near the intersection of 45th Street, a massive black armored Suburban lay tilted on its side against a shattered bus shelter, its front axle snapped by the impact of a heavy dump truck. Two blocks away, inside the lobby of an upscale designer boutique, Marco stood near the iron security gate, his tactical rifle aimed at the street, his shoulder bleeding from a graze wound.

Behind him, huddled under a velvet display counter, sat Emma. She was clutching her yellow raincoat tightly, her eyes wide, but she wasn't crying. She held Alessandro’s silver pocket watch pressed tightly against her chest like a talisman.

Outside, three men in heavy tactical gear moved rapidly down the sidewalk, their weapons concealed beneath long coats, heading directly toward the boutique's glass doors.

Suddenly, the deafening roar of customized V8 engines tore through the street.

Four matte-black Moretti Suburbans smashed through the police barricades at eighty miles an hour, screeching to a halt in a perfect tactical diamond formation directly in front of the boutique, completely blocking the street from public view.

The doors flew open.

Twenty Moretti enforcers in full combat gear poured out, their suppressed rifles firing with lethal, rhythmic precision. The three attackers outside the boutique didn't even have time to draw their weapons; they were cut down instantly, their bodies collapsing onto the slick pavement.

From the center Suburban, Alessandro stepped out.

He wore no helmet, no tactical vest—only his dark wool coat flapping in the wind. In his right hand, he held a heavy chrome-plated automatic pistol. He walked through the smoke and the gunfire with the calm, unstoppable power of a god of war.

He kicked the shattered glass door of the boutique open and stepped inside.

"Marco!" Alessandro called out, his voice cutting through the ringing alarms.

"Don Alessandro!" Marco called back from behind the counter, leaning heavily against the display case. "The rear exit is clear! They tried to pin us inside!"

Alessandro ignored the blood on the floor. He dropped to his knees behind the display counter, his weapon lowering instantly as his eyes found Emma.

"Emma," Alessandro whispered softly.

The little girl looked up. When she saw his face, the fear that she had been holding back for twenty terrifying minutes finally broke. She let out a small sob, threw her arms around his neck, and buried her face into his wet wool coat.

Alessandro wrapped his large arms around her tiny frame, lifting her up against his chest, holding her head tightly against his shoulder as if he could absorb her terror into his own body.

"I've got you," Alessandro murmured, his eyes shutting tightly as he felt her small heart beating frantically against his ribs. "I've got you, little one. You're safe."

Emma pulled back slightly, her tiny fingers trembling as she held up the silver pocket watch. "I kept it safe, Mr. Alessandro... I kept your watch safe..."

Alessandro let out a ragged, choked laugh, kissing her dark curls tenderly. "You did, Emma. You're the braver soldier I've ever known."

He carried her out of the shop, shielding her face with his coat as Marco and six enforcers formed a walking iron wall around them. They loaded her into the center armored Suburban, securing her into the leather seat.

Antonio stepped up to the vehicle, his face dark with grease and gunpowder. "We captured one of the shooters alive, Don. He’s wearing a Vance Syndicate patch under his jacket."

Alessandro stood by the open door of the Suburban, looking down at his underboss. The warmth he had shown Emma vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, absolute darkness that terrified even his own men.

"Where is Julian Vance?" Alessandro asked softly.

"Our intel says he’s at his private estate in Red Hook," Antonio replied. "He’s preparing to board his yacht for the Bahamas in two hours."

Alessandro adjusted his cuffs, his gray eyes turning to pure, unadulterated fire.

"Cancel his trip," Alessandro ordered coldly. "Take thirty men. We are going to Red Hook."

"And the boy... I mean, the girl?" Antonio asked.

"Take her back to her mother," Alessandro said, stepping into the vehicle beside Emma. "Tell Sophia that the men who did this will never see another sunrise."

An hour later, the sun was setting over the industrial docks of Red Hook, casting long, bloody red shadows across the rusted shipping containers and dark warehouses.

Inside a sprawling brick compound overlooking the bay, Julian Vance sat at his desk, frantically packing stacks of bearer bonds and foreign passports into a heavy leather briefcase. Outside, the sound of heavy rain was shattered by the thunderous boom of a breaching charge.

BOOM!

The heavy steel doors of the compound were blown off their hinges, showering the marble foyer in concrete dust and iron shrapnel.

Before the smoke could clear, Alessandro Moretti walked through the ruin.

He moved alone through the grand corridor, his men fan-folding behind him, clearing the side rooms with lethal efficiency. Every Vance guard who stepped into the hallway was dropped instantly by Alessandro’s personal weapon. He fired with horrifying precision—one shot, one kill—never breaking his steady, relentless forward stride.

He reached the doors of the private office and kicked them open.

Julian Vance spun around, drawing a small silver pistol from his belt, his eyes wide with frantic, cornered terror. "Alessandro! Wait! Let's talk! We can settle this! The shipping lanes—I'll give you Brooklyn!"

Alessandro didn't speak. He stepped into the room, grabbed Julian by his wrist, and twisted it until the bone snapped with a sickening CRACK.

Julian screamed in agony, dropping the gun as he fell to his knees on the Persian rug.

Alessandro grabbed him by the collar of his silk shirt, dragging the older man toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the dark, freezing waters of the Hudson River.

"You targeted a child," Alessandro whispered, his voice dangerously smooth, his face inches from Julian’s terrifyingly pale features. "You sent armed men after a six-year-old girl."

"It was... it was Isabella's idea!" Julian choked out, tears of pain streaming down his aged face. "She told me you cared for the brat! She said it was your weakness!"

"She was wrong," Alessandro said softly, raising his chrome pistol and pressing the cold steel barrel directly against Julian’s temple. "It wasn't my weakness. It was my fury."

"Alessandro... please... Omertà! We have a treaty!" Julian wept, clutching his broken wrist.

"The treaty died when you made my son's mother cry," Alessandro said flatly.

BANG.

The glass window behind the desk shattered outward as Julian’s limp body collapsed onto the carpet.

Alessandro stood in the quiet room, the smell of gunpowder filling the air, watching the snow begin to fall over the dark river outside. He lowered his weapon, took out his handkerchief, and carefully wiped a speck of blood from his cufflink.

Antonio stepped into the room, holding his radio. "Don. The Vance network has completely surrendered. Isabella was apprehended at the airport trying to board a flight to Toronto. What are your orders for her?"

Alessandro walked past his cousin, heading toward the doorway.

"Exile her," Alessandro said coldly. "Strip her family of their name, seize their properties, and make sure she never steps foot in the state of New York again. If she returns, end her."

"Understood, Don," Antonio said, watching his leader walk away. "And where are you going now?"

May you like

Alessandro stopped at the threshold, looking out at the city skyline glowing in the dark winter night.

"I'm going home," Alessandro said softly. "My family is waiting."
