Chapter 4 - The Traitor Within

The eviction of Vanessa Hale sent shockwaves through the Cole estate, but Nathan knew the danger was far from over.

That evening, Nathan sat in his study with Marcus and Elena. Sophia was fast asleep on the sofa in the corner, holding a stuffed rabbit Nathan had bought her earlier that day.

"She left quietly with her driver at noon," Marcus reported, laying a folder on the desk. "But sir, we have a bigger problem. Dr. Harrison called again twenty minutes ago."

Nathan raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"The Thallium wasn't just in the wine glass," Marcus said heavily. "We swept the kitchen and your private quarters. We found trace elements of the toxin in the main water filtration reservoir for the master wing."

Elena gasped, covering her mouth.

Nathan’s eyes darkened. "The main water line? Vanessa didn't have access to the basement filtration utility room. That room is locked with biometric keypads."

"Precisely," Marcus said. "Which means Vanessa wasn't working alone. Someone inside this house—someone with high-level security clearance—was helping her."

Nathan leaned back in his chair, his mind racing. Who had access to the master security grids? Who stood to gain from his death besides Vanessa?

Suddenly, the door to the study opened without a knock.

Julian Cole, Nathan’s cousin, walked into the room. He was holding a glass of scotch, his tie loosened, looking relaxed.

"Nathan, my man," Julian said, strolling toward the desk. "I heard the wild rumors from the staff. Did you really kick Vanessa out? Over a wine glass?"

Nathan looked at his cousin. Julian had been his VP of Acquisitions for four years. He was charming, laid-back, and seemingly devoid of grand corporate ambitions. But as Nathan watched him, he remembered something: Julian was heavily invested in Hale Enterprises’ green energy initiative.

"Julian," Nathan said quietly. "Where were you yesterday afternoon at 4:00 PM?"

Julian paused, his glass halfway to his mouth. "What? I was in the executive lounge downstairs, prepping for the dinner party. Why?"

"Marcus," Nathan said calmly. "Pull up the basement corridor camera logs from yesterday at 4:00 PM."

Julian’s smile faltered. "Nathan, what is this? Are you interrogating me now?"

"Show me the footage, Marcus," Nathan repeated.

Marcus tapped a few commands into his tablet and flipped the screen toward Nathan. The footage showed the subterranean corridor leading to the filtration plant. At 4:12 PM, a man in a dark suit walked up to the biometric scanner, scanned his thumb, and opened the door.

It was Julian.

The room went dead silent.

Julian looked at the tablet screen, then back at Nathan. The color slowly drained from his face. "Nathan... I can explain."

"You helped her," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of terrifying stillness. "You gave her the Thallium. You accessed the water lines."

"She promised me thirty percent of the acquisition shares!" Julian burst out, dropping all pretense as panic took over. He set the scotch glass down on the desk with a hard snap. "You were starving the acquisitions department, Nathan! You were sitting on billions while the rest of the family got scraps! Vanessa offered a way out. She said you wouldn't feel a thing—that it would just look like a natural heart failure!"

Elena backed away toward Sophia, her heart pounding.

Nathan stood up slowly. Despite the poison still lingering in his system, he towered over his cousin.

"I trusted you," Nathan said. "I gave you a vice presidency. I paid off your gambling debts in Monaco two years ago."

"You patronized me!" Julian spat, his face twisting with resentment. "You treated me like a charity case! You and your stupid self-righteous moral code!"

"Marcus," Nathan said coldly.

"Sir?"

"Call the District Attorney. Tell him we have a confession, video evidence, and forensic chemical proof of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. He made a sudden, desperate move toward the desk, reaching for the heavy brass paperweight, but Marcus was faster. With a swift, practiced movement, the security chief grabbed Julian’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him down against the mahogany desk, locking him in a restraint.

"Get off me! Nathan, you can't do this! We're blood!" Julian screamed as Marcus forced him to his knees.

May you like

"Blood doesn't poison blood, Julian," Nathan said softly, staring down at his cousin with a look of profound disappointment. "You're done."

Within thirty minutes, three police cruisers arrived at the gates of the Cole estate. Their red and blue lights flashed through the heavy rain outside, casting dancing shadows against the parlor walls as Julian Cole was led away in handcuffs.
