Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE OF LIGHT

Seven months later.
The autumn sun broke through the heavy grey clouds over Lake Michigan, casting a warm, golden light across the stone patio of the Moretti estate.
The heavy, dark oil painting of four-year-old Matteo that had hung in the marble hallway for six agonizing years had been moved. It now hung inside the private family library, placed beside a brand-new, sprawling color photograph taken three weeks ago on the beach.
In the photograph, ten-year-old Matteo stood in the center, smiling brightly, wearing a light linen shirt, his dark curly hair messy in the wind. Beside him stood four-year-old Chloe, wearing a yellow dress, sitting on Alessandro’s broad shoulders, her small hands clutching his hair as they both laughed.
And standing right beside Alessandro, her hand tucked warmly inside his, was Olivia.
Out on the green lawn, Matteo was teaching Chloe how to throw a small leather football. Their bright, ringing laughter carried across the manicured grass, bouncing off the high stone walls that had once felt like a prison.
Standing on the sun-drenched patio, wearing a simple dark blue suit without his formal necktie, was Alessandro. He held two porcelain cups of coffee, watching his children play.
The glass patio doors slid open with a soft, smooth rustle.
Olivia walked out onto the stone terrace. She wore a soft cream-colored cashmere sweater and dark trousers, her hair flowing naturally over her shoulders, her skin glowing with health and peace.
Alessandro turned, a genuine, warm smile appearing on his face—a smile that his men had not seen in a decade. He handed her one of the coffee cups.
"They've been running around out there since 7:00 AM," Olivia said with a soft laugh, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "Dr. Vane says Matteo’s arm has fully healed. His grip strength is back to one hundred percent."
"I know," Alessandro murmured, resting his broad arm along the stone balustrade beside her. "He threw a football through my study window yesterday afternoon."
Olivia gasped, her eyes going wide. "Alessandro! You didn't yell at him, did you?!"
Alessandro let out a deep, rumbling laugh that shook his chest. "Yell at him? I gave him twenty dollars and told him to work on his accuracy."
Olivia smiled, shaking her head as she leaned her shoulder against his arm, looking out over the lawn.
"He called me 'Mama' again this morning," she whispered softly, her eyes glistening with sweet, happy tears. "I was afraid... after we told him the truth about his mother Isabella... I was afraid he would stop."
Alessandro turned to face her. He set his coffee cup down on the stone ledge, taking both of her soft hands in his large, warm palms.
"Isabella gave him life, Olivia," Alessandro said, his voice rich with profound, unconditional devotion. "But you gave him a future. You carried him through the fire. You protected him when the whole world wanted him dead. You are his mother in every way that matters to God and man."
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
He opened it slowly.
Inside lay a breathtaking ring—a custom-cut, five-carat clear diamond flanked by two deep emeralds, set in a band of hand-worked silver engraved with the subtle pattern of olive branches.
Olivia’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the brilliant ring up into Alessandro’s dark, fierce eyes.
"Alessandro..." she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Seven months ago, you brought my son back into this house," Alessandro said, dropping to one knee on the warm marble terrace, looking up at her with eyes that contained zero doubt, zero fear, and infinite love. "You healed a house that was broken by grief. You brought light back into my life when I was nothing more than a ghost living in a fortress."
He held up the ring.
"Olivia Bennett," Alessandro said, his voice ringing clear and strong in the warm autumn air. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me spend the rest of my life protecting you and our children?"
Out on the lawn, Matteo and Chloe had stopped playing. They stood together near the fountain, watching the patio with wide, excited eyes.
"Say yes, Mama!" Matteo shouted at the top of his lungs, waving his arms wildly.
"Say yes!" Chloe squealed, jumping up and down in her little yellow dress.
Olivia let out a tearful, joyous laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek as she looked down at the man who had turned his empire into a shield for her family.
"Yes," Olivia whispered, stepping into his arms as he stood up. "Yes, Alessandro. A thousand times yes."
Alessandro pulled her close, dipping her gently as he pressed his lips against hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the bright, golden light of the afternoon sun.
Matteo and Chloe came sprinting up the terrace steps, throwing their arms around their parents' legs, their joyous cheers filling the warm air.
