Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Conservatory

The fragile truce held for three weeks.

Taylor spent her afternoons at the brownstone, watching Chiara bloom under the steady, patient rhythm of music. The little girl was speaking in full sentences now, her musical talent blossoming like a spring flower. And Nicholas... Nicholas had become a constant, quiet presence in her life—sharing coffee in the mornings, walking her to her car at night, and looking at her with a fierce, quiet devotion that felt heavier and more permanent than any contract.

But in the underworld, truces are only ever temporary.

It was a crisp Tuesday evening in October. Taylor was scheduled for an evening recital evaluation at the Westmont Academy conservatory across town, where she still taught part-time. Nicholas had insisted that Marco drive her in the armored Lincoln, but Taylor had politely declined, wanting a semblance of normalcy, promising to take a cab straight back to the Beacon Hill brownstone afterward.

It was a fatal mistake.

As she walked down the dimly lit stone steps of the conservatory at 8:30 PM, the autumn air biting sharply against her skin, the shadows near the alleyway detached themselves from the brick wall.

Two men in dark jackets stepped forward, blocking her path.

— Miss Wells, a raspy, unfamiliar voice sneered. Mr. Moretti would like a word with you. About your new employer at the Beacon Hill estate.

Taylor’s heart slammed into her throat. She spun around to run back toward the conservatory doors, but a third man materialized behind her, grabbing her arm with a brutal, bruising grip that cut off her breath.

— Let me go! she screamed, dropping her folio as she struggled against the grip.

— Shut her up and get her in the van, the leader hissed. Marino will trade half his North Side docks to get his precious music teacher back in one piece.

Before they could drag her toward the idling black van parked at the curb, the sound of screeching tires shattered the quiet night.

A sleek black Escalade rocketed around the corner, jumping the curb and slamming to a halt with blinding headlights flashing across the alley.

The rear door flew open before the vehicle had even fully stopped.

Nicholas Marino stepped out.

He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore a dark tactical sweater, his sleeves pushed up, his face cast in an expression of such pure, cold, murderous fury that even the kidnappers froze in sheer terror.

Marco and two other enforcers poured out behind him, their weapons drawn with terrifying speed.

— Let her go, Nicholas said. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It carried the chilling, absolute finality of an executioner.

The lead kidnapper panicked, shoving the barrel of a pistol against Taylor’s ribs. — Stay back, Marino! One step and the girl takes a bullet!

Nicholas didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.

A sharp, deafening crack echoed down the alley.

Before the kidnapper could even tighten his finger on the trigger, Nicholas's pistol fired with pinpoint, lethal precision. The man's weapon flew from his hand as a bullet grazed his shoulder, sending him howling to the pavement in shock and agony.

The second kidnapper dropped his hands instantly, throwing them in the air as Marco’s weapon pressed firmly against the back of his skull.

Within three seconds, the threat was neutralized.

Nicholas crossed the alley in two massive strides, shoving the injured kidnapper aside and grabbing Taylor by the shoulders, pulling her frantically into his chest.

— Are you hurt? he demanded, his voice shaking with a raw, terrifying panic as his hands rapidly checked her arms, her face, her shoulders for blood. Did they touch you?

— I... I'm okay, Taylor gasped, burying her face against the warm wool of his sweater, trembling uncontrollably as the adrenaline crash hit her all at once. I'm okay.

May you like

Nicholas wrapped his arms around her with a fierce, desperate strength, burying his face in her hair, holding her like she was the only real thing left in a world built on violence and betrayal.

— I told you, he whispered fiercely against her ear, his breath hot and ragged. I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you.
