Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Six Months Later.
The sun shone brightly over the manicured lawns of the Aurelia estate in Connecticut. The air was filled with the sweet scent of fresh-cut grass and the beautiful, continuous sound of two healthy babies babbling happily on a large play blanket.
Liam and Chloe were six months old now, chunky, giggling, and bursting with life. They were sitting up, their gray eyes wide with wonder as they batted at a set of wooden blocks.
I stood on the patio, wearing a simple white sundress, a cup of fresh tea warming my hands. My body had fully recovered, my eyes were bright with a newfound confidence, and the woman who had been left for dead in that hospital room was now the chairperson of the Aurelia Foundation’s Maternal Health Division—a global charity I had launched to fund NICU care for mothers in need.
Dominic’s trial had concluded the month before. Facing overwhelming evidence of bank fraud and corporate embezzlement, he had pleaded guilty and was currently serving a five-year sentence in a federal correctional facility. Natalie had given birth in a public ward, entirely cut off from the luxury she had sold her soul for, living on the minimum court-mandated support Dominic’s bankrupt estate could provide.
The glass doors behind me slid open, and my grandfather walked out, accompanied by Marcus Vance, who was carrying a portfolio of our new foundation expansion plans.
"You're glowing, Audrey," Alistair said, pulling out a chair and sitting beside me.
"I'm happy, Grandfather," I said, looking out at my children. "For the first time in three years, I feel like I'm exactly where I belong."
May you like
"You belong at the head of this family, my dear," Alistair smiled, raising his tea cup to me. "The world tried to see if you would break, and instead, you showed them how an Aurelia builds an empire."
I smiled, watching Liam successfully stack two blocks before knocking them down with a loud, joyful shriek. Dominic had thought that by emptying my bank accounts, he had stripped me of my value. He never understood that the greatest asset I possessed wasn't the money, or the name, or the estate. It was the absolute, unyielding strength of a mother who would tear the world apart to protect her children. And as I looked out at the beautiful, endless horizon waiting for us, I knew our family was finally unbreakable.
