Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Crown Prince

The sun had barely cleared the horizon when Adrian arrived at the sleek glass-and-steel tower of Vale Industries in downtown San Diego the next morning.
He didn't wait for his private elevator card. He strode straight through the grand lobby, his jaw clenched, ready to tear into whoever was responsible for the digital lockout on his corporate account.
The security guard at the turnstile—a guy named Miller who had nodded respectfully to Adrian every morning for five years—stepped directly into his path.
“Morning, Mr. Vale,” Miller said, his tone entirely flat, devoid of its usual subservient warmth.
“Step aside, Miller,” Adrian snapped, swiping his gold-embossed executive badge across the optical scanner.
BEEP. RED LIGHT. ACCESS DENIED.
Miller didn't blink. “I’m sorry, sir. My instructions from the board’s emergency compliance committee are explicit. Your biometric and digital credentials have been permanently deactivated.”
“I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company!” Adrian shouted, drawing the attention of several junior analysts stepping out of the elevator banks. “Call corporate legal right now!”
“Corporate legal is currently occupied, sir,” a cool, calm voice echoed from behind the marble reception desk.
Adrian spun around.
Ethan Cole walked across the polished lobby. He wasn't wearing his usual unassuming junior assistant suit. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal three-piece suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase and looking every bit the ruthless corporate strategist he had hidden behind a facade of mild-mannered compliance for two years.
“Ethan,” Adrian snarled, closing the distance between them. “What the hell is going on here? Did you lock my terminal?”
Ethan stopped three feet away, his expression entirely unreadable. “I locked your administrative privileges, Adrian. Along with the board of directors, who held an emergency executive session at 6:00 AM this morning.”
“On whose authority?!”
“On the authority of our primary voting bloc,” Ethan said smoothly, pulling a single folded document from his breast pocket. “Whitmore Holdings LLC acquired twenty-nine percent of our common stock yesterday afternoon through open-market transactions and private block purchases. Combined with the institutional shares assigned via trust proxies, Mrs. Claire Vale now controls fifty-four percent of the voting power in this corporation.”
Adrian felt as though someone had punched him squarely in the chest.
“Claire doesn't know anything about corporate governance,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “She’s a housewife.”
“She was a housewife because you preferred her quiet,” Ethan corrected sharply. “Before you married her, she graduated top of her class in corporate law and financial restructuring at Georgetown. She simply chose to step back to raise your son. A choice you apparently mistook for permanent submission.”
Ethan handed him the paper.
Adrian looked down. It was a formal notice of termination, signed by the newly appointed chairperson of the board.
The signature at the bottom wasn't a placeholder. It was Claire’s clean, precise handwriting.

Effective immediately, Adrian Vale is stripped of all executive authority, voting rights, and corporate representation pending an independent federal audit into financial malfeasance and asset misappropriation.
“You’re finished, Adrian,” Ethan said quietly, turning toward the private elevators. “And if I were you, I’d stop worrying about the company board. You have bigger problems waiting for you across town.”
