Chapter 4 - THE INNER CIRCLE

The basement boardroom of the DeLuca estate was built like a military bunker. Reinforced concrete walls three feet thick were lined with soundproofing panels, and an advanced electronic jammer hummed in the center of the ceiling, scrambling all incoming and outgoing cellular, radio, and satellite signals.

Seated around a heavy oak conference table were the three lieutenants who formed the backbone of the DeLuca empire.

To the left sat Marcus Vance—a cold, calculating man in his late forties who managed the syndicate’s financial portfolios, shell corporations, and legal defense funds. He was immaculate, precise, and rarely showed emotion.

To the right sat Anthony DeLuca—Gabriel’s younger cousin. Anthony was hot-headed, aggressive, and commanded the syndicate's street enforcement teams across South Boston. His knuckles were permanently bruised, his eyes darting restlessly around the room.

At the far end sat Dominic Torretto—a battle-hardened veteran who had served Gabriel’s father for twenty years and currently oversaw all dockside logistics, security personnel, and import distribution.

Gabriel sat at the head of the table, an unlit cigar resting between his fingers. Marco stood behind him like a silent ghost.

"Three million dollars in cargo seized in less than two hours," Gabriel began, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet cadence that made the air in the room feel thin. "The FBI knew the exact container serial numbers. They knew which customs inspector had been paid off. They knew the shift change times."

Gabriel slammed his hand down onto the mahogany table—a single thunderous strike that made every glass on the table jump.

"Who sold us out?" Gabriel roared.

Silence fell over the room, thick and suffocating.

Anthony was the first to speak, leaning forward and slamming his fists onto the table. "It's the damn Morettis! Old man Moretti has been trying to take over Dock Three for six months! They bought off someone at the harbor master's office!"

"No," Marcus Vance corrected calmly, adjusting his golden rimless glasses. "The harbor master’s office didn't have access to those specific encrypted bill-of-lading documents. Gabriel is right. The leak came from inside this room, or from someone with direct physical access to the main server console upstairs."

Anthony’s eyes flared with sudden rage. He stood up, pointing a thick finger directly across the table at Dominic. "Are you looking at me, Marcus? Or are you looking at Dominic? Dominic’s guys run the docks! He's the one who handles the manifest sheets!"

Dominic didn't flinch. He slowly leaned back in his leather chair, staring at Anthony with cold, murderous disdain. "Watch your mouth, kid. I was taking bullets for Gabriel’s father while you were still wetting your bed in Southie. I built those dock routes with my own blood."

"Then how did the feds get the numbers, Dominic?" Anthony sneered, stepping closer. "Maybe you're getting tired! Maybe Moretti offered you a nice retirement pension in Florida to turn over the keys to the kingdom!"

"Enough!" Gabriel’s voice sliced through the escalating fight like a razor blade.

Both men instantly shut their mouths and froze.

Gabriel slowly stood up. He walked around the table, his heavy footsteps echoing against the concrete floor. He stopped behind Marcus, resting a large hand on the accountant's shoulder.

"We have had three security failures in four months," Gabriel said softly. "First, the ambush on my daughter’s vehicle on Route 9—an attack planned with exact knowledge of our unmarked transport route. Second, the arson at our warehouse in Charlestown. And now, the seizure at Dock Three."

Gabriel walked slowly toward Anthony, looking his younger cousin dead in the eyes.

"Someone in my house is a traitor," Gabriel whispered. "Someone believes that if they pull the foundation out from beneath me, Old Man Moretti will let them sit on my throne."

Gabriel leaned in close to Anthony’s face. "Let me make one thing crystal clear to everyone in this room. If I find out who is feeding information to the Morettis, I will not shoot them. I will not give them a quick death. I will strip them of everything they love, bone by bone, and bury them beneath the concrete of the very docks they betrayed."

Anthony swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "Gabriel, you know I'm loyal. I'd die for this family."

"Loyalty is shown through results, not words," Gabriel said coldly. He turned back to face all three men. "Until the leak is found, all financial transfers are frozen. All shipment routes are suspended. No one leaves the estate grounds without Marco’s explicit authorization. Is that understood?"

"Understood, boss," the three men chorused in unison.

"Dismissed."

The three lieutenants filed out of the room quickly, leaving Gabriel alone with Marco.

Gabriel walked over to a small bar in the corner, pouring himself two fingers of neat bourbon. He downed it in a single gulp, the amber liquid burning down his throat, doing nothing to quell the fire in his chest.

"You don't think it's any of them, do you?" Marco asked softly, stepping up beside him.

Gabriel stared at his empty glass. "Anthony is too reckless to pull off a leak this sophisticated without tripping over his own feet. Dominic is too proud to bow to Moretti. Marcus loves money, but he knows Moretti would kill him the moment he outlived his usefulness."

Gabriel turned to Marco, his dark eyes shadowed with profound exhaustion. "The leak isn't coming from their heads, Marco. It's coming from inside my house. Someone who has physical access to my private quarters."

Marco’s eyes widened slightly. "You don't mean..."

"No," Gabriel cut him off sharply before Marco could say her name. "Not Rachel."

"Gabriel, be rational," Marco warned gently, his voice dripping with cautious concern. "She arrived three weeks ago. She was broke, desperate, and her son needed expensive medical care. She was in the clinic the night Evelyn was brought in. What if that wasn't a coincidence? What if Moretti placed her there?"

"She saved my daughter's life!" Gabriel growled, his voice echoing in the concrete room. "She worked on Evelyn with her bare hands while my own men were trembling! If she wanted to harm my family, she could have let Evelyn suffocate right there on that table!"

"Saving a child gains ultimate trust," Marco countered quietly. "It buys complete, unquestioned access to your inner sanctuary, your home, and your children. It is the ultimate Trojan horse."

Gabriel slammed his empty glass onto the bar, shattering the heavy crystal base.

"Investigate her," Gabriel rasped, his voice pained and dark. "Investigate her ex-husband, her debts, her grandfather's contacts, every dollar that has ever crossed her bank account. If you find a single thread connecting her to Moretti... tell me immediately."

Gabriel turned away, his heart heavy as lead. "But if she is innocent, Marco... god help whoever is trying to frame her."
