Chapter 5 - The Face in the Dossier

-5-

The fluorescent lights of Dr. Arispe’s basement office seemed to hum with a menacing, synthetic vibration as I stared down at the manila folder resting on the scarred wooden desk. My hands were shaking so violently that I could barely bring myself to lift the tab. My mother leaned forward, her face etched with the grim resolve of a woman who had spent a lifetime fighting corrupted institutions, and gently placed her palm over my trembling fingers.

“Open it, Laura,” she whispered softly, her voice steady and grounding. “Whatever is inside that file, we face it together. You are not alone.”

I took a deep, shuddering breath, pulled back the heavy cream-colored cover, and looked directly at the profile sheet clipped to the top of the dossier.

Client ID: TX-8842-B.

Donor / Patient Classification: Designated Cryopreserved Embryo Trust.

Matched Paternal Genetic Marker: Alejandro Mercer.

The name hit me like a physical blow to the chest. Alejandro Mercer. The name wasn't just a random data point from a forgotten medical ledger; it was one of the most powerful, feared, and prominent figures in the tri-state legal and financial sector. He was the senior managing partner of Mercer Hale—the very mega-firm where my brother Daniel operated as a senior litigation partner, and the primary corporate entity that held the master trust controlling every single asset Diego had spent his entire adult life trying to conquer. Alejandro Mercer was a billionaire venture capitalist, a titan of industry known for his ruthless corporate restructuring, and a man who had famously lost his reclusive wife in a tragic private aviation accident three years prior, leaving him a childless widower guarding a massive, multi-generational fortune with fierce isolation.

“Alejandro Mercer?” I gasped, looking up at Dr. Arispe with wide, disbelieving eyes. “That’s... that’s impossible. Alejandro Mercer has no connection to this clinic—he’s a corporate magnate, not a fertility patient!”

“That’s what the public registry says, Mrs. Laura, which is why the clinic buried his file deeper than anyone else’s,” Dr. Arispe explained grimly, tapping a finger against a confidential legal rider attached to the back of the dossier. “Three years ago, following the tragic passing of his wife, Mr. Mercer privately contracted with our institute’s premier research wing to establish an anonymous, highly confidential genetic reserve using his own cryopreserved samples and matched surrogate frameworks—a private legacy project intended to ensure his bloodline survived without public media scrutiny. When the freezer failure occurred during our renovation, his reserve straws were accidentally mixed into the general general patient rotation to replace stock that had been compromised.”

My mother let out a sharp, breathless laugh that held no humor—only cold, staggering disbelief. “My God,” she murmured, shaking her head. “Diego spent six years trying to worm his way into Alejandro Mercer’s inner circle, stealing corporate funds, inflating his company’s stock valuation, and begging for venture capital backing from Mercer Hale just to feel like a titan of industry. And all the while, his discarded, unfaithful wife—the woman he threw divorce papers at and called useless—was unknowingly carrying Alejandro Mercer’s biological child.”

The irony was so dark, so violently cosmic, that for a fraction of a second, I felt a hysterical bubble of laughter rise in my throat before crashing back down into sheer, crushing terror. Diego had built his entire identity on the delusion of being a superior patriarch carrying on a grand family legacy. He had thrown me out because he believed I couldn't give him a son, replacing me with Paola and a pregnancy he bragged about to the entire city. Now, not only was Diego’s vasectomy failure a proven medical fact that completely destroyed his paternity claims, but the baby growing inside my womb didn't carry a single drop of his DNA—it belonged to the most powerful, untouchable billionaire in the entire financial sector.

“What does this mean for the divorce proceedings?” I asked, my voice barely audible as I looked between Dr. Arispe and my mother. “If Diego finds out... if the courts subpoena these medical records during our asset division hearings... he’ll tear my life apart. He’ll claim I conspired with the clinic, that I committed fraud—”

“He can’t,” Dr. Arispe interrupted firmly, sliding a final legal document across the desk. “Because according to the emergency injunction your brother Daniel filed yesterday regarding Diego’s corporate malfeasance, all family court proceedings have been temporarily elevated to federal jurisdiction due to cross-state wire fraud and illegal asset transfers. Furthermore, under federal reproductive privacy statutes, genetic data resulting from a laboratory swap caused by gross institutional negligence cannot be weaponized by a divorcing spouse to claim adultery—especially when the husband’s own medical profile proves he was sterile at the time of conception.”

My mother stood up, buttoning her blazer with an air of absolute, unyielding authority. She looked down at the dossier with a fierce, protective light in her eyes. “Diego wanted to destroy you, Laura. He wanted to strip you of your home, your dignity, and your child. Instead, he has walked straight into a legal minefield he can never escape. And as for Mr. Alejandro Mercer...” My mother paused, a sharp, calculating smile touching the corners of her lips. “It’s time we scheduled a very private meeting with the most powerful man in the city. Because when Alejandro Mercer finds out he has an heir growing inside your womb, the war against Diego Sterling won't just be won—it will be absolute annihilation.”
