Chapter 3 - Confrontation at Midnight

Caroline’s expression hardened, but she quickly pivoted, placing a delicate hand on Nathaniel’s arm. "Nathaniel, darling, I was just explaining to Natalie how comfortable the guest accommodations are—"

"Leave us, Caroline," Nathaniel said without looking at her. His eyes hadn't moved from Emma and Sophie.

"Nathaniel, the rehearsal dinner starts in an hour—"

"I said leave us," he repeated, his voice low and commandingly absolute.

Caroline's jaw tightened. She shot me a look of pure poison before sweeping past him, her red soles clicking angrily against the terracotta tiles.

The silence that followed was suffocating. The room felt suddenly too small for the heavy atmosphere between us.

Nathaniel slowly dropped to one knee. The ruthless CEO vanished, replaced by a man looking at a miracle he had been denied for nearly a decade.

"Hello," he said softly to the girls. His voice trembled—a sound I had never heard from him in all our years together.

Emma took a step forward, her natural curiosity overriding her caution. "Are you the man from the paper?"

"I am," Nathaniel said, tears visibly glistening in his gray eyes. "My name is Nathaniel."

"You have my chin," Sophie said, stepping up beside her sister and pointing a small finger. "Mommy said a long time ago that my chin came from someone who loved computers."

Nathaniel let out a choked sound that was half-laugh, half-sob. He raised his eyes to mine, and the agony in them cut through me like a blade. "Eight years, Natalie. Eight years of milestones. First steps. First words. Lost teeth. You let me miss all of it."

"I was running for my life!" I yelled, unable to keep the tears back any longer. "Your mother threatened to destroy me! She had legal documents, signed NDAs, threats that would have put me in prison or left me homeless with two infants! I had no family, no money, no power! What was I supposed to do?"

"You were supposed to trust me!" he roared, standing up. "I would have burned the world down before I let her touch you!"

"You weren't there!" I screamed back, stepping right into his space, chest to chest just like we used to argue in the old office. "You were on a plane to California! You left me alone in that freezing apartment with morning sickness and two positive tests!"

"Because she told me you were gone!" Nathaniel took my shoulders, his grip tight but trembling. "She told me you traded us for cash! I spent three weeks in an alcoholic haze in San Francisco because I thought the only woman I ever loved had used me as a stepping stone!"

We breathed heavily in the quiet space between us, the raw, bleeding truth finally laid bare between us after eight long years. The wall of lies built by his late mother had crumbled, leaving behind only the wreckage of what we could have been.
