Chapter 6 - A New Watch

Six months later.
The morning sun broke beautifully over the shores of Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, golden light across the expansive glass and stone terrace of the Steel estate. The air was crisp, carrying the clean, sharp scent of the water.
Lily and Owen were running across the massive, manicured lawn, their curly blond hair flying in the wind as they chased a hyperactive golden retriever puppy I had bought them for their sixth birthday. Their silent, haunted panic had completely vanished, replaced by the loud, beautiful, and chaotic sound of healthy children's laughter.
I sat at a modern iron table on the deck, a cup of black coffee in my hand, reviewing the final adoption decrees that had been signed by a federal judge at dawn.
LILY STEEL. OWEN STEEL.
The Vance name was erased. The debt was settled. Vanessa Vance was currently serving her first year of a twenty-five-year sentence at a federal penitentiary in Illinois, her assets seized and redistributed entirely into a locked educational fund for the twins.
Marco walked out onto the deck, placing a fresh stack of corporate briefings on the table. He looked out at the lawn, watching Owen trip over the grass and burst into a fit of uninhibited giggles while Lily helped him up.
"They've grown two inches since they got here, Boss," Marco remarked, a soft smile on his face. "The house doesn't feel like a fortress anymore."
"It isn't a fortress, Marco," I said, taking a slow sip of my coffee as I watched my daughter throw a tennis ball across the grass. "It's a home."
The world thought that Ryker Steel was a man who only cared about power, money, and blood. They thought that because I had built an empire on shadows, I didn't know how to live in the light. But they had completely forgotten that the strongest empires aren't built on corporate mergers or financial trusts.

They are built on the benches where the innocent are protected.
I smiled, taking a deep, clean breath of the lake air, completely victorious, completely free, and finally, a father.
