Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Sterling

Twenty minutes later, the quiet, rundown block of Maple Street was disrupted by the arrival of two sleek black SUVs and a private mobile medical unit.
Neighbors poked their heads out of windows as four paramedics in pristine uniforms rushed up the narrow stairs of 412 Maple, carrying specialized medical equipment and a folding gurney. Dr. Harrison, a world-renowned physician who usually treated foreign dignitaries and billionaires, stepped into the cramped apartment, immediately setting to work.
Dylan stood near the window, his arms crossed over his chest, watching Dr. Harrison perform a rapid assessment. Maya and Lily sat quietly on the sofa, eating fresh sandwiches that Mark—who had arrived with the medical team—had provided, along with juice boxes and warm soup.
"Severe pneumonia, malnutrition, and systemic exhaustion," Dr. Harrison reported, turning to Dylan with a grave expression. "Her fever is pushing 104. If she had stayed in this room another twenty-four hours without intravenous antibiotics, her lungs would have collapsed. We need to move her to Saint Jude’s Private Wing immediately."
"Do it," Dylan ordered without hesitation. "Spare no expense. I want a full team of specialists assigned to her around the clock."
As the paramedics carefully secured Clara to the gurney and carried her out, Maya ran over and grabbed Dylan’s coat jacket.
"Are you taking Mommy away?" Maya asked, her voice tight with panic.
Dylan dropped to his knees, coming eye-to-eye with the small girl. For the first time in his adult life, he didn't care if his thousand-dollar suit touched the dirty floor.
"I am taking her to a place where doctors will make her healthy again," Dylan said gently. "And you two are coming with me. No more cold rooms. No more starving."
Lily ran over, clutching her sister’s hand. "Can we bring the bread?"
Dylan looked at the brown paper bag sitting on the rusted counter. A bitter, heavy knot formed in his throat. "You can bring whatever you want, sweetheart. Everything is going to change now."
An hour later, Clara was safely admitted to the VIP isolation ward at Saint Jude’s Hospital, surrounded by monitoring equipment and quiet, efficient nurses. Maya and Lily, exhausted from the day's terror, were fast asleep in the adjoining private suite under the watchful eye of Mark and two female security guards.
Dylan sat in the private waiting room, staring at a stack of documents Mark had retrieved from Clara's apartment.
They were architectural blueprints—stunning, revolutionary designs for high-end, sustainable urban developments. Complex structural calculations, intricate elevations, and master plans that were worth tens of millions of dollars.
At the bottom of every single blueprint, in the right-hand title block, a name was embossed in gold leaf:
STERLING DEVELOPMENT CORP. - CHIEF ARCHITECT: JULIAN STERLING.
Dylan’s hands tightened on the thick paper until it crumpled beneath his fingers.
"Sir," Mark said quietly, stepping into the room with a tablet in hand. "Our private investigative team just finished running a deep background check on Clara Vance's activities over the last seven years."
"Tell me," Dylan commanded, his eyes fixed on the blueprints.
"Seven years ago," Mark explained, reading from the screen, "Clara was offered a head design position at Sterling Development. Shortly after she accepted, Julian Sterling—the CEO—stole her master design for the Manhattan Sky-Tower project and passed it off as his own. When Clara threatened to go to the press and sue him, Sterling framed her for corporate espionage."
Dylan’s jaw locked. "Go on."
"Sterling used his political connections to ensure her architect license was permanently revoked," Mark continued, his voice heavy. "He froze her bank accounts, brought bogus legal suits against her, and made sure no firm in the country would hire her. When she gave birth to the twins eight years ago, Sterling used his leverage to threaten her—he told her that if she ever resurfaced or tried to contact anyone from her past, particularly you, he would use his influence with Child Protective Services to have her children permanently removed and placed in state care."
The room grew icy cold. The air felt heavy, saturated with a dark, suffocating rage.
"He kept her in hiding," Dylan said slowly, the truth settling into his marrow like liquid lead. "He forced her to live in squalor while using her ghost-written designs to build his entire real estate empire."
"Yes, sir," Mark said. "Every major project Sterling Development has launched in the last five years—including the West Coast acquisition you were supposed to sign today—was designed entirely by Clara Vance from that tiny apartment on Maple Street. He paid her a pittance in cash every month, just enough to keep her and the girls from starving, while he made hundreds of millions."
Dylan stood up slowly. He walked over to the glass window overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline. In the distance, rising high above the river, was the towering steel-and-glass framework of the Sterling Center—Julian Sterling’s flagship project.
A project built on Clara’s blood, sweat, and stolen genius.
His phone began to ring. The screen displayed an incoming call from Julian Sterling.
Dylan answered, bringing the phone to his ear. He didn't speak.
"Dylan!" Julian Sterling’s loud, boisterous voice boomed through the speaker. "Where the hell are you, man? My legal team and I have been sitting in your boardroom for two hours! We were supposed to sign the transfer papers for the West Coast project at four!"
Dylan looked down at the blueprints on the table, then over at the glass window of the ICU where Clara lay hooked up to IV drips.
"The signing is off, Julian," Dylan said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
There was a sudden, stunned pause on the line. "What? Dylan, don't play games. We’ve been negotiating this thirty-million-dollar deal for six months! What's going on?"
"I met your chief architect today," Dylan whispered.
Silence fell over the line—a heavy, suffocating silence that stretched for five long seconds.
"What did you say?" Julian’s voice lost its warm, friendly tone, instantly turning sharp and hostile.
"I said," Dylan repeated, every word laced with absolute destruction, "that you built your kingdom on stolen bread, Julian. And I am coming to burn it to the ground."
May you like
Dylan ended the call, tossed his phone onto the couch, and turned to Mark.
"Call our legal team," Dylan commanded. "And call the press. Tell them Carter Urban Holdings is launching a hostile takeover of Sterling Development tomorrow morning."
