Chapter 4 - The Strike at the Docks

The revelation sent a shockwave through the upper echelons of the Vale organization.
Victor Vance had been Gabriel’s right-hand man for over a decade, handling the syndicate's real estate investments and shipping contracts. If Victor was behind the assassination attempt, it meant a massive internal war was brewing inside the organization.
That evening, Gabriel held a private meeting in the library.
He was dressed in a dark silk robe, sitting behind his grand walnut desk. Marcus stood to his right, while Sadie sat across from them. On the desk lay the blue carbon paper and a printout of Victor Vance's recent financial transfers.
"Victor thinks I'm dead or amputated by now," Gabriel said, his voice cold and precise. "He scheduled an emergency meeting of the executive board for tomorrow night at the Port Alder shipping terminal. He intends to declare himself acting chairman of Vale Enterprises."
"We can ambush him at the terminal," Marcus suggested, his hand resting on his sidearm. "Take him out before he can rally the crew."
"No," Gabriel said flatly. "If we execute Victor without public proof, his loyalists will split the organization into pieces. We need him to confess in front of the entire board."
Gabriel turned his gaze to Sadie.
"Sadie," Gabriel said gently. "Victor knows what Dr. Aris looked like, but he doesn't know who you are. He thinks you're just an invisible maid."
Sadie felt her heart beat faster. "What do you need me to do, Mr. Vale?"
"Victor will have Dr. Aris's medical ledger with him at the terminal to prove to the board that I died of 'unavoidable surgical complications,'" Gabriel explained. "I need someone who can move through the terminal's VIP suite unnoticed during the meeting... someone who knows how to spot the wrong detail."
Sadie looked at Gabriel. For months, she had lived in fear of debt, hiding in the shadows of this grand estate. But looking at Gabriel now—a man who had trusted her judgment when twenty world-class surgeons had dismissed her—she felt a surge of quiet courage.
"I'll go," Sadie said firmly. "I know how the serving staff moves through the terminal suites. I can get into his office."
Gabriel walked around the desk, stopping right in front of her. He reached out with his good hand, placing his broad palm gently against the back of her hand. His touch was warm, sending a strange, electric spark through her pulse.
"You don't have to do this, Sadie," Gabriel whispered, looking deeply into her eyes. "You've already saved my life. You can take your forty-two thousand dollars and walk away forever."

Sadie looked back into his dark, intense eyes, seeing the genuine care and respect shining behind his intimidating persona.
"I'm not walking away, Gabriel," she said softly, using his first name for the first time. "We finish this together."
