Chapter 1 - The Threshold of the Kwon Mansion

The iron gates of the Kwon estate swung open with a heavy, mechanical hum, revealing a world that Maya Brooks had only ever seen from the greasy window of a city bus.

Thirty acres of manicured lawn, ancient willow trees, and a lakefront mansion built from gray stone and dark glass. To anyone else, it looked like paradise. To Maya, it looked like a lifeline.

Her 2008 Honda Civic sputtered as she parked near the staff entrance, coughing once before dying entirely. She sat behind the wheel for a moment, listening to the ticking of the cooling engine, and checked her phone screen. A red banner blinked from her banking app: Account Overdrawn. Two blocks away, her landlord was threatening to change the locks if she didn't clear her back rent by Friday.

Her two-year-old daughter, Lily, sat strapped into her car seat in the back, quietly turning the pages of a battered board book with sticky fingers.

“We’re going to be fine, peanut,” Maya whispered, unbuckling her seatbelt and forcing a tired smile as she looked back at her daughter. “Mommy just needs to clean some very big rooms, and then we’ll have a roof over our heads and brakes that don't squeak.”

Maya had applied for a junior housekeeper position—a job meant for dusting molding, scrubbing marble, and staying entirely invisible. She had no idea about the twelve nannies who had fled in terror. She didn't know about the twins. And she certainly didn't know that Mr. Harris, the head of household who greeted her at the service entrance, looked at her the way a captain looks at a fresh recruit walking into a minefield.

“Maya Brooks?” Mr. Harris asked, his voice crisp, precise, and completely devoid of warmth.

“Yes, sir,” Maya said, lifting her single suitcase and duffel bag.

“You understand the terms?” Mr. Harris said as he led her down a long, white-tiled corridor that smelled faintly of lemon wax and expensive air freshener. “Live-in quarters on the third-floor staff wing. Meals provided. Complete discretion required at all times. You will clean the library, the formal dining room, and the west guest suite. Under no circumstances are you to enter the north wing on the second floor. That area is strictly restricted.”

“Understood,” Maya nodded, keeping her eyes forward.

“Good,” Mr. Harris muttered, stopping in front of a heavy oak door that led to a small, immaculate staff apartment. “Settle in quickly. Mr. Kwon does not tolerate tardiness, mistakes, or noise.”

What Mr. Harris didn't mention was that the "north wing on the second floor" housed the nursery.

And what Maya didn't know was that her daughter, Lily, possessed an explorer's curiosity that no warning sign could ever deter.
