Chapter 6 - The True Inheritance

Three weeks later, the morning sun over Kennebunkport felt entirely different.

The Halstead estate was locked up tighter than a federal vault, its sweeping gardens already beginning to look slightly overgrown as the family’s assets remained tied up in bankruptcy court and ongoing criminal proceedings for wire fraud and conspiracy.

I sat at my corner office desk on the top floor of Crosswell Navigation, the harbor breeze drifting in through a cracked window. The city skyline outside was bright, busy, and completely under my control.

My phone buzzed on the mahogany surface. It was a legal notification from Marcus regarding the final liquidation of the Halstead corporate shell companies.

I swiped the notification away and looked down at my right hand.

The heavy, deceptive diamond ring Warren had given me was gone. In its place rested an old, simple gold band that had belonged to my father—a reminder that real strength doesn't come from someone else's promises, but from the foundation you build with your own hands.

The forgotten coat hanging in my closet back home was gone, too—dropped off at a dry cleaner’s weeks ago, its pockets entirely emptied of anything left behind.

I opened the ledger on my screen, approved a major expansion for our northern shipping lanes, and smiled.
