Chapter 4 - Waking in the Lion's Den

When I woke up, the smell of industrial bleach had been replaced by the sterile, crisp scent of antiseptic and expensive linen.

My body felt like it had been run over by a freight train and then put back together with coarse thread. Every time I tried to inhale, a sharp, white-hot pain stabbed through my ribs. I groaned, my eyelids fluttering open against the harsh, warm light of a private hospital suite that looked more like a five-star hotel penthouse than a medical ward.

"Don't move."

The voice came from the shadows near the tall windows overlooking the Chicago skyline.

Victor Romano was sitting in a high-backed leather armchair. He had shed his jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and the sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing pale, corded forearms. There was a glass of amber whiskey in his hand, though he hadn't touched it.

"Where..." My throat felt like sandpaper. "Where is Leo?"

"Leo is sleeping down the hall, under heavy guard," Victor said, his voice deep, smooth, and utterly devoid of its usual casual dismissiveness. He stood up, walking slowly toward the bed. "He asked about you thirty times before he finally dropped off. He drew a picture of you with wings. Apparently, my son thinks you're an angel."

I tried to shift my weight, wincing as the stitches pulled tight across my back. "The... the cleaning agency. They'll fire me for missing the shift..."

A dark, humorless smile touched the corners of Victor’s mouth. He stopped beside the bed, looking down at me with those piercing pale eyes.

"You don't work for the agency anymore, Clara," he said quietly.

I frowned, confused. "What?"

"When you threw yourself in front of a hail of armor-piercing rounds to save my blood, you stopped being an employee," Victor said, resting his hands on the metal guardrail of the bed. His presence was overwhelming, filling the entire room with a heavy, magnetic authority. "You are something else now. Something permanent."

"Mr. Romano..."

"Victor," he corrected instantly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"Victor," I corrected myself, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I did what anyone would have done. You don't owe me anything. Just... please make sure my brother's medical bills are paid. That was our agreement."

Victor’s expression hardened. He set his glass down on the bedside table with a sharp clink.

"Your brother's medical bills are already paid in full," Victor said smoothly. "In fact, I moved him this morning to Northwestern Memorial’s private VIP wing. He has a team of the best specialists in the country attending to him right now. He’ll never want for a single pill, a single machine, or a single cent for the rest of his natural life."

My breath hitched. "You... you didn't have to do that."

"I always pay my debts, Clara. And I especially pay for blood spilled on my behalf," he leaned closer, his face inches from mine, his gaze locking onto my eyes with a hypnotic intensity. "When I woke you up, I told you five words. Do you remember them?"

I swallowed hard. “You’re going to be my wife.”

I had thought it was delirium. A fever dream born from blood loss and shock.

"You were joking," I whispered, though my voice lacked conviction.

"I don't joke," Victor said softly, the smoothness of his tone carrying a terrifying weight. "In my world, assets that prove their loyalty are secured. You took three bullets meant for my son. You bled on my floor. You proved that your soul is forged in iron, while half the men who wear my family crest would have run for the door."

He straightened up, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets.

"The men who attacked us yesterday were sent by Dante Moretti," Victor continued, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous register. "Moretti thinks my house is weak because I lost my wife. He thinks he can bleed me dry by targeting my son. If I marry you, Clara, it sends a message to every syndicate boss from here to New York. It tells them that the woman who stands beside me is untouchable. And it binds you to the only family that will ever truly protect you."

May you like

"Marry you?" I stared at him, my mind spinning. "I'm a maid, Victor! I clean your floors! I wash your shirts!"

"And now you'll wear diamonds and sit at the head of my table," he replied without missing a beat. "The arrangement is non-negotiable, Clara. You saved my son's life. In return, I am giving you mine. You are coming back to the Romano estate. But this time, you won't be carrying a mop."
