Chapter 4 - The Boardroom InterruptionTwo months passed, transforming the austere mausoleum on Commonwealth Avenue into a home filled with life, laughter, and the steady hum of construction.

The west wing had been completely overhauled. Gone were the antique carpets that trapped wheelchair wheels; in their place were sleek, seamless hardwood floors, automated pocket doors, and a state-of-the-art sensory playroom that Elise affectionately called her "command center."

For Thomas, the transformation was spiritual. The dark cloud that had hovered over him since Emma’s passing began to lift, replaced by the chaotic, beautiful reality of parenting a brilliant, sharp-witted four-year-old. He found himself rushing home from corporate meetings just to hear about Elise’s latest physics experiment or to help her build complex Lego cities that rivaled his actual architectural models.

However, not everyone at Lawson Atlantic was thrilled with the new CEO's divided attention.

It was a Tuesday morning when the boardroom doors flew open during a high-stakes investor pitch for the new Boston Waterfront Commercial Hub—a 300-million-dollar project.

Richard Vance, the senior vice president and Lawson Atlantic’s primary shareholder, was mid-sentence, presenting profit margins to a row of severe-looking venture capitalists from New York, when a motorized whir echoed down the glass-paneled hallway.

All heads turned.

The heavy mahogany double doors pushed wide open. Elise rolled into the boardroom, sitting proudly in her sleek, custom-designed carbon-fiber wheelchair, wearing a pink NASA hoodie. Perched securely in her lap was a remote-controlled bulldozer.

"Dad," Elise announced clearly, ignoring the startled gasps of the New York investors. "The structural integrity of my Lego bridge is compromised. The support beams are buckling under the weight of the dump truck. I need your professional engineering consultation immediately."

A stunned silence fell over the room. Richard Vance's face flushed a deep, mottled crimson.

"Elise!" Thomas said, standing up quickly, though a warm, irrepressible smile broke across his face. He looked at the horrified faces of the New York investors, then back at his daughter. "We're in the middle of a multi-million dollar pitch, munchkin. Can this wait twenty minutes?"

"No," Elise stated firmly, crossing her small arms. "Physics waits for no man, Dad. That's what you told me when the kitchen table bridge collapsed yesterday."

A sharp, abrasive laugh cut through the tension. Richard Vance stepped forward, adjusting his tie, his expression dripping with condescension.

"Excuse us, gentlemen," Richard addressed the New York investors with a tight, fake smile, before turning his venomous gaze toward Thomas and the little girl. "It seems our CEO has turned a billion-dollar development firm into a glorified daycare center. Thomas, we have serious stakeholders here. We don't have time to play with toys for a disabled charity case you picked out of a dumpster in Southie."

The temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

The sound of Thomas's chair scraping back against the hardwood floor was deafening. The easy, warm father vanished in a single microsecond, replaced instantly by the ruthless, untouchable corporate titan who had built Lawson Atlantic from the ground up.

Thomas walked slowly around the mahogany table, his eyes locked onto Richard Vance with a predatory coldness that made the older executive take an involuntary step back.

"Repeat what you just called my daughter," Thomas whispered, his voice dangerously low, slicing through the room like a razor blade.
