Chapter 2: The Unfiltered Footage

The heavy glass doors of the ballroom burst open as the distant sirens finally arrived. A team of paramedics pushed through the crowd, followed closely by four uniformed Chicago police officers.
"Over here!" I called out, my voice steady and commanding.
The paramedics immediately swarmed us, gently taking Sophie from my arms to treat the laceration on her temple. The sight of the white gauze instantly turning bright red made the lead officer, a stern woman named Detective Miller, tighten her grip on her tactical belt.
"What happened here?" Detective Miller asked, her eyes scanning the blood-splattered menu board still resting near the head table.
My father immediately stepped forward, using his most authoritative, businessman voice. "Officer, there’s no need for drama. This is a private family matter. The child was caught stealing, a minor altercation ensued, and an accident occurred. We are handling it internally."
"An accident?" I walked directly up to the detective, showing her my blood-covered hands.
"My brother, Preston Vale, falsely accused my eight-year-old daughter of stealing his phone. When I defended her, he ripped that solid oak board off its stand and swung it full-force into her head. It is not an altercation. It is aggravated assault on a minor."
"She’s lying! She’s always been jealous of my success!" Preston yelled, his face flushing a furious purple. "The brat stole my phone! I have a right to protect my property!"
"Officer," I interrupted calmly, turning to the hotel manager who was hovering anxiously near the back. "I want the security footage from that camera pulled immediately. Play it on the reception screens. Let’s see exactly how that phone got into my daughter's pocket."
The hotel manager, terrified of a massive liability lawsuit, didn't hesitate. He hurried to the AV booth.
A heavy, agonizing silence gripped the ballroom as the massive digital projector screens on either side of the stage flickered to life. The footage was crystal clear.
The Frame-Up: The video showed the reception twenty minutes prior. Preston could be seen leaning over the back of Sophie’s empty chair while she was looking at the cake. With a swift, calculated movement, he slid his own titanium iPhone deep into the pocket of her small denim jacket.
The Smile: The camera captured the chilling, malicious grin on his face as he walked away, perfectly executing the trap.

The Assault: The footage jumped forward. It showed me standing between Preston and Sophie. It showed Preston’s face twisting with rage, stepping back, tearing the heavy oak menu board from its iron tripod, and swinging it like a baseball bat directly into an eight-year-old girl’s skull.
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the two hundred wedding guests. Several of the bridesmaids covered their mouths, tears springing to their eyes. The illusion of the perfect Vale family was demolished in absolute high-definition.
