Chapter 2 - The Aftermath & The Paper Trail

By the time the two pitkin county sheriff cruisers pulled up with their blue and red lights flashing against the white snow, the scene at the gate had devolved into absolute chaos.
Aunt Clara and Uncle Raymond were already packing their things into their sedan, screaming at Martha for using them as props in a criminal scheme.
"We thought this was a family gathering!" Clara yelled, slamming her trunk shut. "You told us Valerie invited us! You made us drive three hours in a snowstorm just to cover up your illegal land grab!"
"Shut up, Clara! You always were jealous of me!" Martha shrieked back, her pristine hair now wild from the mountain wind.
The deputies stepped out of their vehicles, hands resting calmly on their belts. Dep. Miller walked up to Wesley, who was sitting on the hood of his car, holding his head in his hands, weeping openly.
"Mr. Vance?" Deputy Miller asked, referencing the call from my lawyer. "We received a complaint regarding trespassing, harassment, and an ongoing property dispute. The owner of the residence, Ms. Valerie Vance, has provided us with proof of sole ownership, as well as video documentation of unauthorized entry attempt."
"I live here!" Wesley choked out, standing up and waving his arms toward the grand wooden house visible through the trees. "I’m her husband!"
"Sir, your wife's legal representative provided a signed prenuptial agreement," Deputy Miller responded flatly, pulling a sheet of paper from his clipboard. "Section 4, Clause B explicitly states that this property remains entirely separate, and in the event of a divorce filing, residence rights are terminated immediately upon service of papers. You were served thirty minutes ago. She has also paid for a two-week stay for you at the Extended Stay Motel in Aspen down the valley. Your personal belongings are in those bags right over there."
The deputy pointed to four neatly packed black duffel bags resting by the guard hut.
Martha charged toward the deputy. "You can't do this! Do you know who I am?! I am Martha Vance! My family built the—"
"Ma'am, step back," the second deputy warned, stepping in front of her. "If you do not disperse immediately, I will arrest you for disturbing the peace and criminal trespassing on private road easements. Clear out. Now."
Watching the monitors from my warm kitchen, holding a steaming mug of tea, I felt a strange, quiet stillness wash over me. The knot that had been tightening in my chest for the last three years finally snapped.
On screen, I watched as the caravan of cars slowly turned around in the narrow mountain turnoff. Cousin Greg threw the gold balloons into the snowbank. The three-tier cake was squeezed into the back of Wesley’s trunk next to his duffel bags.
Wesley stood by his driver's side door for a long time, staring up at the house, hoping to catch a glimpse of me through the windows. But I didn't step out onto the balcony. I didn't give him the satisfaction of seeing my pain.
When his car finally rolled down the driveway behind his mother’s SUV, I set my mug down, picked up my phone, and called Silas Vance.
"They're gone, Silas," I said.
"Good," Silas replied, his deep, experienced voice steady on the line. "Because Phase One is complete. But Valerie... you need to get down to your office tomorrow morning. The forensic accountant finished looking through the joint accounts you shared with Wesley."

My heart sank slightly. "What did he find?"
"Wesley didn't just try to steal your house," Silas said grimly. "Over the past eighteen months, he’s been draining your joint venture account—the one set up for property maintenance and taxes—and funneling it into a shell business registered in his mother's name. They weren't just planning to take the house, Valerie. They’ve already stolen nearly four hundred thousand dollars from you."
