Chapter 6 - Where Sunflowers Bloom

Six months later—Newburyport, Massachusetts.
The summer sun shone brightly over forty acres of rolling green hills, blooming golden sunflower fields, and state-of-the-art wooden barns overlooking the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The sign above the stone entrance gates read:
THE MIA & JULIA CANINE RESCUE & REHABILITATION SANCTUARY
In the central courtyard, dozens of rescued working dogs—some missing legs, some wearing specialized wheels, and others recovering from trauma—ran freely across the soft grass, their barks filling the warm summer air with joy.
Sitting on a wide wooden bench beneath a towering oak tree was ten-year-old Mia. She looked healthy, her cheeks rosy from the sun, wearing a bright yellow sundress as she carefully brushed the thick black coat of Rook, who lay snoring contentedly across her feet.
Nearby, Mara stood near the open barn doors, wearing comfortable jeans and a simple cotton shirt, reviewing medical charts for three newly arrived therapy dogs.
A sleek black sedan pulled quietly up the gravel driveway, stopping near the farmhouse.
Dominic Vale stepped out.
He was no longer wearing the sharp, cold dark suits of the Boston underworld. Today, he wore a casual linen shirt and dark trousers, looking ten years younger. The terrifying, cold shadow that had followed him for six years was completely gone, replaced by a deep, grounded peace.
"Daddy!" Mia cheered, dropping her brush and running across the grass to throw her arms around his waist.
Dominic caught his daughter effortlessly, swinging her up into a hug before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. "How was art class today, sweetheart?"
"I painted the ocean!" Mia smiled brightly. "And Mara taught me how to give physical therapy to the three-legged retriever!"
"She’s a tough teacher," Dominic chuckled, looking over Mia’s head toward Mara.
Mia ran back to play with Rook, leaving Dominic to walk slowly across the courtyard toward the barn.
Mara set her clipboard down on a wooden table, smiling as he approached. "You're late, Mr. Vale. The evening feeding starts in ten minutes."
"I was delayed in court," Dominic said, stopping in front of her. His hand reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The judge signed the final decree today. The Croft estate assets have been officially transferred to the sanctuary’s permanent trust."
"Thomas’s money is going to fix a lot of broken lives," Mara said softly, looking out at the happy dogs playing in the courtyard.
"It’s a start," Dominic murmured.
He looked down at Mara, his icy gray eyes now warm and filled with an intense, quiet devotion. He reached out, taking her hand in his, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her palm.
"Boston is quiet now, Mara," Dominic said softly. "Caleb is running the legitimate security firms. The old business is closed. I’m done with the dark."
"I know," Mara whispered, leaning in slightly toward him. "I saw you smile twice last week. That’s a record."
Dominic let out a low, genuine laugh, pulling her gently against his chest. "I only smile when I’m here. With you. And Mia."
"Then stay here," Mara said, looking up into his eyes. "We have plenty of room."
May you like
Dominic leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a slow, deep, and fiercely protective kiss that tasted of warm summer air and sweet promise.
Beside the oak tree, Rook lifted his large head, sniffing the warm breeze carrying the scents of sunflowers, ocean salt, and the two people who loved him most. The blind dog let out a long, happy huff, closing his eyes as he drifted back to sleep in the golden afternoon sun.
