Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Gold Coast

The storm began to break just as the clock struck 5:00 a.m.

The wind died down to a gentle sigh, and the first pale streaks of gray dawn cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting the mahogany walls in muted tones of silver and gold.

I lay back against the silk pillows, breathing heavily. The glacial rot in my shins hadn't vanished—death was still coming for me, a debt that every man eventually has to pay. But the poison in my veins had been flushed out hours ago by Dr. Harris and his team, buying me a little more time. A few weeks, maybe a few months. Long enough to clean house. Long enough to ensure my legacy didn't fall into the hands of a monster.

Elena stood quietly by the bedside, her hands folded neatly in front of her uniform. She had spent the last three hours changing my linens, administering the clean medications, and nursing me with a quiet dignity that humbled me to my core.

"You should go rest, Elena," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. "The sun is coming up."

"I'm fine, Mr. Moretti," she replied, her eyes kind. "Mia is still asleep in the staff room. I didn't want to leave you alone."

I looked at her—really looked at her. For decades, I had measured human beings by their utility, their fear, or their greed. I had surrounded myself with killers, politicians, and socialites. I had built a fortress of stone and blood, believing love and loyalty were myths invented by poets to comfort fools.

Yet here, at the very end of my road, the only person who offered genuine warmth was a woman who cleaned my floors and a little child who clutched a patchwork rabbit.

"Elena," I said, my voice steadying.

"Yes, sir?"

"The cottage at the edge of the estate. It's yours now. Free and clear. The deed is already registered in your name."

Elena gasped, taking a step back, shaking her head rapidly. "Oh, no, Mr. Moretti. I couldn't accept that. It's too much—"

"Quiet," I smiled faintly. "Listen to me. In that safe behind the portrait, alongside the corporate assets, there is a trust fund designated for Mia’s education. Full tuition, through university, anywhere in the world she wants to go."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, tracking down her tired cheeks. She didn't speak for a long moment; she simply reached out and gently placed her hand over mine.

Unlike Vanessa’s cold, calculating touch, Elena’s hand was warm, steady, and full of a quiet, unyielding grace.

"Thank you, Dante," she whispered, using my first name for the very first time.

Outside, the sun crested the horizon of the Gold Coast, bathing the sprawling estate in a brilliant, golden light. The frost on the windows began to melt, turning into bright, clear droplets that slid down the glass like tears.

I closed my eyes, listening to the steady hum of the heater and the faint, distant sound of a little girl laughing in the kitchen. For the first time in a very long time, the cold inside me retreated. I wasn't just a dying mafia boss anymore. I was a man who had finally found his way home before the dark closed in.
