Chapter 9 - The Awakening of Lily

The storm over Lake Michigan had finally broken by 6:00 AM.
Golden rays of morning sunlight cut through the tall windows of Room 914 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, illuminating the colorful drawings and get-well cards taped to the walls.
Enzo sat in the armchair beside the bed, holding his daughter’s small, warm hand in his. His eyes were heavy with fatigue, but the dark, murderous tension that had choked him for twelve hours was completely gone.
Beside him, sitting quietly on a guest chair with a cup of hot coffee, was Nora Hayes.
A soft, tiny flutter moved against Enzo’s palm.
Enzo bolted upright.
Lily’s long dark eyelashes trembled. She let out a small, tired sigh, turning her head toward the sunlight. Her eyes opened—clear, bright, and the exact shade of hazel as her late mother’s.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her voice rough from the oxygen mask.
Enzo leaned forward, bringing her small hand to his lips, kissing her fingers again and again as hot tears broke through his defenses.
"I'm here, baby," Enzo choked out, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated relief. "Daddy is right here. You're safe."
Lily blinked against the light, looking around the room before her eyes settled on Nora.
A tiny, faint smile touched the little girl’s lips.
"The lady from the party," Lily murmured softly. "She gave me the pretty straw."
Nora’s eyes welled with tears. She stepped forward, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from Lily’s forehead. "Good morning, Miss Lily. How are you feeling?"
"My tummy doesn't hurt anymore," Lily said, reaching out with her other hand to touch Nora’s sleeve. "Did we finish the cake?"
May you like
Enzo let out a low, breathless laugh, wiping his face with the back of his hand.
"We're going to have a whole new cake, sweetheart," Enzo promised, resting his forehead gently against hers. "A cake as big as the house, with all the pink straws in the city."
