Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Wolves

The office of Notary Public No. 124 in the heart of Polanco was the epitome of luxury. Polished marble floors, rich oak panels, and a massive glass table where the fate of my life’s work was supposed to be sealed.
Renata arrived looking like a queen in a tailored, royal blue suit, her diamond earrings catching the morning light. Beside her sat Hugo, my CFO, pretending to review the corporate documents with a professional scowl.
On my side of the table sat Licenciado Torres, his briefcase closed, his hands folded calmly. Doña Carmen sat quietly in the corner, her rebozo wrapped tightly around her shoulders, keeping her head low.
"Well, let's not waste any time," Renata said, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the table toward me. "The notary is ready, and we all have busy schedules. Sign the transfer of executive power and the deed to the Colonia Del Valle property, Alejandro."
"Before I sign," I said, leaning back in my chair, "I want Hugo to explain the recent discrepancy in the Q2 corporate tax filings."
Hugo went slightly stiff but quickly recovered. "Alejandro, this isn't the place for a business meeting. This is a private family transition. Sign the papers first."
"No, I think it is the perfect place," I said. "Because the notary is an officer of the law. And I want it on the record that you and my wife have been embezzling funds from Harlan Logistics to fund an offshore account in Panama for the last eighteen months."
Renata let out a loud, mocking laugh. "Embezzlement? Alejandro, you are losing your mind, just like your mother. You have no proof of such absurd claims. Sign the papers, or I will call Dr. Mendoza right now and have the custody and guardianship papers for your mother processed."

She pulled out her phone, waving it in my face. "One call, Alejandro. That's all it takes to lock her away forever."
"Go ahead," I said, gesturing to her phone. "Call him."
