Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

The following morning, the atmosphere inside the Caldwell mansion had shifted from a tomb to a war room.

Ethan refused to sit in his wheelchair. With Rebecca’s help, he moved to an executive office chair fitted with heavy-duty casters, rolling himself up to the massive glass desk overlooking his estate. He had spent the entire night reading Gabriel’s notebooks page by page. They contained detailed financial trails, offshore account numbers, and signed affidavits from former city officials linking Caldwell Enterprises directly to the arson and intimidation campaign that claimed Gabriel's life twenty years ago.

"Mr. Caldwell," his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Gabriel), said nervously over the secure speakerphone. "You requested an emergency audit of the 2006 downtown waterfront acquisitions?"

"I didn't ask for an audit, Marcus. I asked for a confession," Ethan said, his voice cold, steady, and carrying the absolute authority of a man who had nothing left to lose. "I want every file, every land deed, and every internal memo regarding the South Chicago docks fire pulled by noon."

"Sir, those files are sealed under legacy corporate protection acts," Marcus protested. "Opening them could trigger a federal investigation into your father's estate. It could destroy the stock value of Caldwell Enterprises overnight."

"Let it burn," Ethan replied without hesitation. "If the foundation is rotten, the whole building deserves to come down."

"Ethan," Rebecca warned softly, standing by the door with a cup of coffee she had brought him. "If you do this, the board of directors will turn on you instantly. They'll use your paralysis to declare you mentally unfit, strip you of your voting shares, and lock you away in a sanitarium before the ink dries."

Ethan looked up at her, a grim, defiant smile touching his lips. "Let them try. I spent twenty years hiding behind my father's money, pretending I was a king while I was actually a prisoner. Gabriel died fighting these bastards. The least I can do is pick up the banner before my time runs out."

Sammy burst into the study, holding a small portable keyboard he had dragged from his bedroom. "Mr. Ethan! I learned the song on the tape! Listen!"

Without waiting for permission, Sammy began clumsily tapping out the opening chords of Gabriel’s melody on the plastic keys, humming the tune in his high, sweet childhood voice.

Ethan closed his eyes, letting the simple notes wash over him. The physical pain in his legs was still there, the numbness in his lower back remained a stark reminder of his accident, but the paralyzing darkness in his mind had shattered.

He picked up his desk phone and dialed a direct extension.

"Sal? Get the PR team on the line," Ethan commanded his executive secretary. "And call the City Tribune investigative desk. Tell them the CEO of Caldwell Enterprises is holding a press conference at dawn tomorrow to drop a bomb that will shake Chicago to its foundations."

"A press conference, sir? About what?" Sal stammered.

"About murder, corporate greed, and a ghost who is finally coming home," Ethan said, slamming the receiver down.
